A brief overview of what Mesothelioma cancer is

by Robert Granger

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is found usually among men who are advanced in years. This type of cancer is caused from the effects of exposure to asbestos ad as a result affects the membranes of our vital organs such as the heart and lungs. Mesothelioma cancer is not very easy to diagnose due to the fact that the symptoms this type of cancer presents are very similar to other diseases that are much more common.

Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common form of this disease and as a direct result accounts for around 75% of all cases of this disease. This type of cancer (Pleural Mesothelioma) attacks and affects the lining of the lungs and presents common symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing, chest pains, difficulty in swallowing and even weight loss. As we have said, these symptoms are very common to other diseases but anyone who has any of them we would strongly suggest consulting their doctor right away just to be on the safe side.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

One of the less common forms of Mesothelioma is called Peritoneal Mesothelioma and this type of cancer affects the abdomen. Peritoneal Mesothelioma cancer affects the abdominal lining and frequently found in people who have been exposed to asbestos and accounts for around 20% of all Mesothelioma cases. Symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma are as follows: abdominal pains, abdominal swelling, weight loss, loss of appetite, weakness and nausea.

People who have worked with asbestos or have been exposed to the substance are at risk of developing the disease. One of the most important things that we should remember when dealing with this type of cancer is speed. Early diagnosis of the disease is of utmost importance so that it can be treated quickly. With time being of importance when dealing with Mesothelioma, the earlier it is discovered the more chance we have of success in its treatment.

Active Symptom Control For Mesothelioma Studied in Chemotherapy Treatment

By Mars Sente

Although cancer mesothelioma has no cure at present, many medical professionals believe that chemotherapy can be a successful treatment to control the symptoms of the condition, however, this is still being discussed, according to a study by The Lancet, the British Journal.

The researchers studied 409 patients of all who suffer from malignant pleural mesothelioma in different parts of the world. According to the study, patients received either an active symptom control with a treatment of chemotherapy of two drugs, or simply an active control treatment. "The active symptom control treatments include steroids, bronchodilators, pain and palliative radiotherapy medicines," according to the study. "

Following the study, patients in both treatment options were compared and, according to investigators, "the addition of chemotherapy for symptom control assets did not provide a significant benefit or progress in survival rates or quality of life" between mesothelioma victims.

Understanding of diagnosis and chemotherapy, mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a disease in which malignant cancer cells develop in a thin layer of tissue that lines the chest cavity that covers the lungs, which is also known as the pleura or peritoneum, the lining of the abdomen and most of the bodies, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is described as a chemotherapy treatment for cancer, but that is often given to a patient when cancer cells spread rapidly to healthy cells.

Physicians should properly assess a patient age, health and stage of cancer prior to administration of chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is actually the possibility of a patient not as a treatment to cure mesothelioma, but is administered by a number of reasons, such as:

* Halting the growth and spread of cancer, to control cancer

* To minimize or reduce tumors - this method is also known as neoadjuvant chemotherapy

* Palliative chemotherapy in which the pain and other symptoms have to be reduced

* The destruction of microscopic disease that remains after a surgical procedure, also known as adjuvant chemotherapy

Chemotherapy was administered either as a catheter placed into a large vein in the body or a catheter is attached as a port which is located in the chest under the skin over a period of time.

Living with mesothelioma

Unfortunately, victims of mesothelioma will continue to receive setbacks in his life at risk their status, as currently there are no successful treatments for the deadly cancer.

However, a person has the opportunity to participate in a series of clinical trials of the treatment groups, as well as the opportunity to develop a mesothelioma demand for monetary compensation as a means of payment for the condition, which is often associated with very expensive medical bills.

Consult with an experienced doctor or personal injury lawyer may be able to provide insightful details as to the development of a mesothelioma claim to receive monetary compensation for the costly medical bills.

Mesothelioma and Asbestosis Global Health Epidemic on the Horizon

by avi solutions

The lung diseases asbestosis and mesothelioma have been proven for decades to be a result of asbestos exposure. Yet, asbestos continues to be mined, and employers still fail to protect workers from the dangers of asbestos. Faint warnings to the public have been made barely audible, and a deadly global health epidemic is looming on the horizon.

Asbestosis and mesothelioma are the subjects of 21st century international reports warning international officials, advocacy workers, and the general public of an impending epidemic of these two devastating diseases. Asbestosis and mesothelioma, which are caused by exposure to asbestos, take decades to surface symptoms, and the retired workers of yesteryear's thriving asbestos industries are beginning to suffer from asbestos related diseases today.

In countries like Brazil, workers suffered decades under corrupt politics, medical care was discouraged, workers were randomly dismissed from employment, and diagnostic tests were not made available to support any identification or claim for asbestosis or mesothelioma. It is only recently that unions protecting workers have surfaced, but for thousands of asbestos workers, it is too late to avoid succumbing to the harsh lung disease of asbestosis or the fatal cancer of mesothelioma.

As workers and innocent home dwellers continue to be exposed to asbestos, the death estimates due to asbestos related diseases will continue to reach into the next half century. Factories in China spew asbestos from their factories into neighboring cities. In Africa, a state of emergency has been requested in asbestos filled territories where hundred-mile stretches are filled with residents living, working and sleeping while surrounded by airborne asbestos fibers. In India, the European Asbestos Removal Association (EARA) issued a 2008 report titled "India's Asbestos Time Bomb" which warns of India's future burden of caring for tens of thousands of asbestosis and mesothelioma patients as a result of India's infatuation with asbestos products. In this asbestos removal report, comparisons are made between the export levels of India and the UK. In just two decades, India's asbestos imports surpassed the levels that the UK used in their entire industrial history. The UK is now facing record levels of occupational disease, with thousands dying from mesothelioma every year. Despite the UK's forewarning of the future, India continues to import massive tons of asbestos products annually, and corporations with significant monetary interest encourage unsuspecting consumers to embrace the use of asbestos products.

Even with indiscriminate medical records that deflate the actual deaths due to asbestosis and mesothelioma, the World Health Organization estimates that asbestosis and mesothelioma will be responsible for 90,000 deaths around the world in a single year. As long as asbestos continues to be mined, imported and exported - the numbers will continue to rise over the next century.

Asbestosis and mesothelioma are not diseases that are easily recognized by physicians or the lay citizen. The public must be made aware of the dangers of working with, and living with, asbestos made products. Scientists and manufacturers must race to discover the economic answer to replace asbestos products with a safer alternative. But with or without change, the next decade will surface the consequences of haphazard occupational healthcare as the children of tomorrow care for the asbestos workers of today

Things You Can Do to Prevent Mesothelioma and Asbestos Cancer

By James S. Pendergraft

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the mesothelium or the sac like protective covering of internal organs. The main cause is exposure to asbestos. Therefore the best possible prevention is to avoid exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma takes about thirty to fifty years for making itself prominent. People above the age of sixty five have shown an increased tendency to develop asbestos cancer. The mesothelioma is more common in men than women.

Asbestos is a mineral that is very commonly used. Due to increased health risks the use of asbestos has been reduced according to government regulations. In spite of all the regulations asbestos is being used in many manufacturing industries where it is mandatory for production. The most effective prevention method is to limit the exposure.

Working in a company which uses asbestos is not safe. Looking for alternate employment would be the safest option. The companies have asbestos related safety precautions and one can ensure they are being followed. The commonly seen jobs that pose the highest risk of mesothelioma are:

1-Insulation manufacturing and installations.

2-Mining

3-Railroad workers

4-Workers in the factories

5-Asbestos manufacturing companies

6-Ship yard workers

7-Automotive repairs

8-Manufacturers of gas masks

Many old homes contain traces of asbestos. If you suspect your home to contain materials made of asbestos they can be tested in the laboratory. There are agencies dealing with asbestos removal and they can be contacted for removing asbestos from your home. Though it can be done by yourself it is safer to let an asbestos abatement or removal contractor perform the procedure.

Asbestos that is not disturbed is not considered a health hazard. But if there is flaking, friable ceilings and plumbing and if the building is built before the 1980s then there are chances that they contain asbestos and have to be removed safely. Public buildings like schools, office buildings, libraries, theatres etc are all prone to this hazard. The problem should be brought to the city authorities' notice. Living near someone who works near asbestos also exposes you to the mineral.

Asbestos can be transported through clothing, skin and hair. Even a few strands of asbestos can sometimes lead to mesothelioma.

Once you have been exposed to asbestos and have not yet been diagnosed with the fatal condition, there is still hope for you. If care is taken you might not even develop it. Blood tests can be done annually to confirm that you are well. There are other diagnostic tools that can be performed annually on asbestos exposed individuals to reconfirm their health status. These tests also aid in early detection when the condition is curable and can be controlled.

Smoking should be stopped since smokers are more susceptible to the onset of the condition if they have asbestos exposure history. Prevention is the best way out in mesothelioma since it is fatal if not diagnosed early.

The Definition of Mesothelioma and Mesothelioma Diagnosis

by Patricia Woloch

Definition

The most thorough definition of mesothelioma describes it as a rare cancer caused by asbestos fibers that have been lodged in the mesothelium for many years. The mesothelium is the membrane that encases organs such as the lung, the heart and those of the abdomen. Although it takes many years, these fibers can cause cancer cells to grow in the membrane tissue surrounding the fibers.

Mesothelioma most often develops in the membrane surrounding the lung, and results from inhaled asbestos fibers. This mesothelial membrane is called the pleura. Because lung tissue is so soft and porous, the motion of breathing massages the fibers through the lung tissue to the membrane. The consistency of the membrane is such that the fibers penetrate the pleura and remain trapped there.

Occasionally, fibers that are swallowed follow a similar path through the stomach wall where they become lodged in the lining around the stomach, called the peritoneum. With less frequency, fibers can pass through to the lining around the heart, called the pericardium. Mesothelioma can grow in any of these membranes.

Symptoms

Pleural mesothelioma symptoms can include thickening of the pleura, pleural effusion (fluid collecting in the pleural space), which in turn compresses the lung in that area reducing the amount of oxygen that can get into the blood. This causes shortness of breath along with some pain due to inflammation and, sometimes, infection. Persistent cough is common.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma might include stomach pain or swelling, bowel obstruction, foot swelling, nausea, weight loss, and pain.

Fever, night sweats, or anemia might also be symptoms of either form of mesothelioma. Diagnosis involves specific testing to differentiate it from other diseases, many of which have similar symptoms.

Diagnosis

There are a number of diagnostic tests that are used together with the results of a physical exam to make a diagnosis of mesothelioma. These tests differentiate between diseases and allow the doctor to rule out other diseases and cancers, identifying mesothelioma as the one that matches all of the diagnostic criteria. These include:

• X-rays - X-rays can reveal pleural effusion, pleural calcification, and scarring
• CT or CAT Scan (Computed Axial Tomography) - CT Scans identify tissue density and can identify pleural effusion, pleural thickening and calcification, but it can't differentiate between mesothelioma and other disease.
• MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) - An MRI is more sensitive than CT or X-ray, and is useful for more accurate identification of tissue changes during the course of treatment, and evaluating for surgery.
• PET Scan (Positron Emission Tomography) - PET Scans measure cellular activity. Cancer cells are more active than healthy cells, and this activity shows up in PET Scans.
• Biopsy - A biopsy involves taking a sample of the suspect tissue, either with a needle or through a small incision, and sent to the lab for analysis.
• PFT (Pulmonary Function Testing) - PFT involves a set of breathing tests to measure your lung volume, elasticity, airflow, and gas exchange into your bloodstream. These measurements reveal whether areas of your lung have a reduced volume or are not exchanging gas (i.e., from pleural effusion and resulting atelectasis, aka collapsed lung,) restrictive lung disease, or reduced airflow from obstructive lung disease.
• CBC (Complete Blood Count) - CBC shows the number of red and white blood cells and platelets, the amount of hemoglobin, and the percent of blood that is red blood cells. It also tests other common blood factors that indicate health and illness.
• Bronchoscopy - A bronchoscope is inserted into the patient's lungs through the throat that allows the doctor to view the trachea and upper airways. The scope has the ability to take a tissue sample that can be examined under a microscope, in the same was as tissue collected from a biopsy.
• Cytology - A pathologist microscopically examines cells drawn from fluid near the site of the suspected disease.

New Mesothelioma Treatment Found Among Skin Cancer Creams

by Peter Kent

A group of scientists in Australia have discovered a new potential treatment for mesothelioma cancer victims with the application of two treatments normally reserved for skin cancer patients.
During several tests conducted on laboratory mice with advanced mesothelioma tumors, a skin cancer cream known as Imiquimod was combined with an anti-cancer drug, antiCD40. The two were applied to the mesothelioma mice and, according to researchers, 50 percent of the mice receiving the treatment therapy went into remission following treatment.

The study, conducted by researchers from the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Australia, is considered "breakthrough" according to a PerthNow news article. Additionally, scientists feel that this potentially new mesothelioma treatment may be more readily available than other treatments being researched and tested, as one of the drugs is "already commercially available and the other is currently being tested in clinical trials," according to lead researchers of the study.

Mesothelioma Defined

Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects thousands of individuals worldwide. It has largely been classified as a relatively rare condition, although many physicians and scientists predict a large increase of victims in the near future because of the dormant nature of the cancer. Mesothelioma cancer is caused by exposure to varied levels of asbestos fibers and dust.

During the early part of the 20th century asbestos, which derives from vermiculite, was mined and used in a plethora of products and much more heavily within the construction industry leading to the diagnosis of many construction-related workers.

Mesothelioma cancer commonly remains dormant for 10 to 30 years until symptoms begin to appear, at which point, treatment is almost non-existent.

Patients of mesothelioma cancer are advised to speak with a medical professional immediately and those who suspect they may suffer from asbestos-related conditions can also suggested to contact a medical professional and experienced mesothelioma attorney for additional information.

Diagnosing Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a growing condition in not only America, but around the world. A mesothelioma diagnosis is often a grim and bitter situation for not only a victim, but for family members and friends.

Once an individual has been informed of their condition, they will need to take immediate steps to ensure the best quality of care is received. By determining this, an individual increases their chances of receiving monetary compensation for their disease through the development of a mesothelioma lawsuit.

Such compensation can assist a victim with paying for costly medical treatments including chemotherapy treatments, which can range in the thousands. Speaking with a knowledgeable mesothelioma lawyer can provide insightful information as to a potential lawsuit.

Medical Expert Demands 'Call For Action' with Asbestos Industrial

by Peter Kent

Several researchers, scientists and professors who recently attended the President's Cancer Panel in September were prompted by a professor of environmental and occupational health sciences at SUNY Downstate Medical Center to halt the threat of asbestos among industrial workers by amending government policy on asbestos and mesothelioma cancer as well as all carcinogens in the workplace.

Jeanne Mager Stellman, PhD, explained to the panel of individuals that "decades had been wasted on examining the problem of carcinogens" among the workplace and had contributed to the demise of American workers' health. Dr. Stellman also explained to the panel that the government was responsible for the "lack of the will to prevent occupational disease, death and disability" among workers across the United States.

The President's Cancer Panel is an extension of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and is derived of experts who strive to "improve the investment in preventing cancers" that harm the American people, according to NCI's Web site. However, Dr. Stellman, who gave a deposition of industrial carcinogens claimed that the toxic effects felt by many workers had manifested through the years and eventually caused the development of cancer among thousands, and basically stated that the panel was not doing enough to protect workers from carcinogens such as asbestos in the workplace.

Where Is Asbestos Used?

Asbestos has been classified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a human carcinogen. Asbestos was processed from vermiculite mines that were constructed across the country and employed thousands of Americans until they were deemed unsafe and closed in the 1970s and 1980s. The use of asbestos, however, had already been implemented throughout the construction industry in a vast number of products including the following, according to NCI:

* cement
* hot water pipes
* plastics
* insulation
* roofing
* fireproofing
* sound absorption
* boilers
* steam pipes
* vehicle brake shoes and clutch pads
* ceiling and floor tiles
* paints
* coatings
* adhesives

Mesothelioma As 'Industrial Manslaughter'

Dr. Stellman described to the panel that the carcinogens that industrial workers were exposed to was "ongoing industrial manslaughter" and that through research and records obtained from insulators belonging to a trade union there were and are extreme "cancer risks associated with asbestos and to the widespread control of asbestos that now exists." safe

The EPA is currently responsible for the safe cleanup and disposal of asbestos in American homes, offices, apartment buildings, universities, schools, hospitals, est. However, according to a Seattle Post Intelligencer article from 2007, the EPA has had a "flawed system of examination and cleanup" of several hundred factories that had at one point processed asbestos or contained asbestos-contaminated vermiculite.

Developing Mesothelioma Cancer

According to the NCI, individuals who are at risk for developing asbestos-induced illnesses include those "exposed to asbestos in their workplace, their communities, or their homes." Individuals who feel they may have been exposed to asbestos should contact a medical professional immediately. Additionally, the NCI explains that several signs and symptoms that indivduals can watch for to determine if they may be developing mesothelioma include:

* fatigue
* anemia
* weight loss, loss of appetite
* swelling of the neck or face
* difficulty swallowing
* pain or tightening in the chest
* coughing up blood
* persistent, worsening cough
* shortness of breath
* continued wheezing and hoarseness

Individuals who have been exposed to asbestos fibers or asbestos dust are advised to contact an experienced mesothelioma attorney who can provide a free legal consultation as to the development of a mesothelioma lawsuit. Litigation that is developed surrounding the exposure to asbestos may be able to provide a return on monetary compensation to assist in paying expensive medical bills commonly associated with mesothelioma treatments.

Mesothelioma - Not Always Asbestos

By Donald Plourde

It's no secret that things we take for granted every day are man made materials. Most of the time we never even give pause to think about what the objects we interact on a daily basis is made from. Most everything, with few exceptions, is made from chemicals. This is rarely a concern, until it is discovered that a certain chemical can cause medical problems. However, even natural substances can sometimes cause us our bodies harm.

Asbestos is one of the most useful earth materials. However, due to its poisonous content, several countries have banned the use of asbestos. Excessive exposure to this kind of material can cause lung diseases such as lung cancer or mesothelioma. The latter is the common disease caused by too much inhalation of asbestos fibers, powder, dust, or other forms that asbestos may have been breathed into the lungs.

Weight loss, chest pain, fever, fatigue, hoarseness, or coughs are some common symptoms different diseases. However, they are also the symptoms of this lung disease. When a person suffers from mesothelioma, fluid can surround the lungs. In some cases, the mesothelioma may even cause the lung to collapse. This list is by no means conclusive of symptoms associated with mesothelioma. It is highly advised that if you were exposed to asbestos for long periods of time and you think you may be at risk for it, that you talk to a doctor immediately.

Mesothelioma can be detected through medical tests such as an MRI, chest X-rays or CT scans. Cytology and biopsy can also detect the presence of abnormal cells and fluids in the lungs. If this disease is not immediately treated, the lungs will probably collapse.

Since asbestos causes this kind of serious disease, some countries such as New Zealand, Brazil, Australia, and the U.K banned this kind of material. Many people believe that the United States banned it. However, it never was. The Environmental Protection Agency spent millions researching and reporting on the dangers and risks associated with asbestos. Unfortunately, a Federal Court ruled that there was not sufficient evidence to warrant a ban. This is still a sore spot with the EPA to this day.

However, there are some cases wherein this disease is caused by any kind of fibrous silicates instead of asbestos, although the percentage is only minimal.

The Shocking Truth About Mesothelioma & Asbestos - Men in Big Danger by Not Following H&S Guidelines

By Claire Bowes

All he wanted was to earn more money for his family. To be able to provide a holiday abroad somewhere in the summer and be able to have extra money to do home improvements. He had heard that there was good money to be made in removing asbestos from old buildings. Yes he knew it was dangerous, but today in 2008 the health & safety equipment and training more than compensated for the risk involved.

High measures have been put in place for the specific training to remove asbestos and the protective safety clothing was fool-proof. There was no way anyone could be in danger of contracting mesothelioma, asbestos related lung cancer with all this in place. Or that is what he thought...

Stephen, my husband, went against my wishes and pleas not to go into the asbestos industry. He was adamant that it was 100% safe and it would bring in good money.

He paid to have a medical at the local hospital. He then paid to go onto the week intensive asbestos training course. He then paid for the health & safety equipment/protective clothing. Altogether he forked out £1,000 in preparation to go into the asbestos industry.

The Shocking Truth

Within his first week of working for Company X, he was shocked and appalled at what he was seeing. You see, one of the main components when removing asbestos is that you spray the asbestos with a water-based chemical. This in turn softens the millions of asbestos molecules and thus will not be released into the air and consequently inhaled by the operative while wearing the protective mask.

However, this is what he learned on his H&S training, but this was not being put into practice. What he saw, with this particular company, was that in order to save time and money they were not spraying the asbestos. This meant that when snapping the asbestos into pieces, the millions of asbestos molecules were flying all around within the atmosphere. Yes they were all wearing their protective masks with clean air-flow, but the masks were overwhelmed by the millions of asbestos making them worthless.

The dry asbestos was being breathed in by the men, into their full-headed cover masks and being inhaled right down into their lungs.

Needless to say that Stephen started looking for another job and within a few weeks he was out of the asbestos industry before it was too late for him.

Now I am not saying that all asbestos operatives do not follow the H&S guidelines, but this company certainly didn't and I bet there are many more across the world who do the same. Just be aware of this one lapse of health & safety which could still lead you to contracting mesothelioma, asbestos related disease - even if you are wearing the full protective equipment.

Beware of one safety technique that is not being carried by some companies / operatives when removing asbestos. The lack of this one single technique is putting hundreds of men's lives in danger of contracting mesothelioma, asbestos related lung cancer disease.

What you are about to read will probably shock and upset you. I know this first hand as my husband briefly worked in the asbestos removal industry. What he saw socked him and he consequently quit working with asbestos because he wants to see his two young boys grow up.

Patient Care Technology Systems May Delay Cancer Patient Treatments

by Peter Kent

According to a recent survey from the Macmillan Cancer Support organization in England, there have been several inconsistencies among primary care trusts (PCTs) systems for patients receiving cancer care on time.
The inconsistent patterns, according to the survey, may result in cancer patients, such as mesothelioma patients, suffering from delays in receiving treatments. Because mesothelioma cancer is a condition in which the life expectancy can be approximately 12 months from diagnosis, it is imperative that any treatments or clinical trials that a patient can participate in become available to them immediately as time is of the essence.

The survey also reported that at lest 76 percent of the time, treatment costs were taken into account before deciding to approve or refuse a patient. According to the Cancer Information Network and the American Caner Society (ACS) the costs of treating symptoms and signs of mesothelioma cancer can quickly add up to thousands of dollars. One of the most common treatments used among malignant mesothelioma patients is the administration of Alimta and cisplatin, which cost approximately $4,100 for one cycle, and multiple cycles are almost always required for any effectiveness on decreasing signs and symptoms of the condition.

Diagnosing Mesothelioma

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) describes mesothelioma as a cancer of the mesothelium, which is a membrane that "covers and protects most of the internal organs of the body."

When asbestos fibers are inhaled they begin to form cancerous cells on the lining of the mesothelium, which then becomes abnormal. The cancerous cells begin to spread to additional parts of the body over time.

The NCI has found that "most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum" within the body and that over the last 20 years the incidence of mesothelioma cancer have increased rapidly with approximately 2,000 additional cases of mesothelioma being diagnosed each year in the United States.

Unfortunately, delays are often associated with a correct prognosis of mesothelioma cancer because it is often misdiagnosed. The condition commonly remains dormant within the body for years, even decades, which is why it is important for an individual who may have previously worked with or been exposed to asbestos fibers or dust to know the signs and symptoms of mesothelioma.

The following are several signs as described by Cancer Research UK, an educational non-profit site dedicated to bringing cancer information to patients that should prompt a potential mesothelioma victim to seek medical attention. Symptoms include:

*
 pain in lower back or side of chest

*
 persistent cough

* shortness of breath

*
 hoarse or husky voice

*
 severe loss of weight

*
 sweating and fevers

* difficulty swallowing

*
 pain in the abdomen

*
 swelling in the abdomen

*
 poor appetite

* feeling or being sick

*
 diarrhea

*
 constipation

Overcoming Mesothelioma

Because mesothelioma cancer is currently an incurable disease it is imperative that a mesothelioma patient partake in any of the clinical trials available as well as to contact an experienced environmental toxin attorney who can assist in developing litigation related to asbestos. Building a mesothelioma lawsuit can offer insight into receiving monetary compensation as a return on the damages incurred by a mesothelioma. Such a lawsuit may also provide a relief from the burden of expensive mesothelioma medical bills that often accompany the disease.

Asbestos Related Diseases

By Paul Phlorum

Asbestos is something very dangerous and a lot of people are still unaware of that. Asbestos surveys need to be carried into buildings if it has not be done yet in order to identify if asbestos was used or not in the building.

A recent survey carried out actually indicates that the highest risk of asbestos related lung illness in fact arises from insulation work in the United Kingdom. Epidemiologic work done by a professor called Peto has shown that in the first few years of the twenty first century we can keep on expecting a rise in the number of new cases of mesothelioma in Great Britain mainly due to asbestos. Mesotheliome really is a horrible cancer with a very long latency period.

In the United Kingdom, it presently causes more deaths than road traffic accidents and epidemiologists predict that a further one hundred thousand individuals would die from one type of asbestos cancer called mesothelioma in the coming years. When all types of asbestos-related diseases are gathered, the final death toll could be even higher than that previous number which is shocking.

Research into the treatment and care of this aggressive cancer in the United Kingdom is apparently in bad shape due to a lack of government help over the last years. In 2007 there was just one project dedicated to mesothelioma research funded by Cancer Research UK, but nothing by the Medical Research Council, despite the fact that between 1995 and 2004 the incidence rate of this disease in United Kingdom grew faster than any other cancer. Improvement have been made though with the availability of support for people suffering from mesothelioma by cancer charities throughout the United Kingdom.

Any delay in diagnosing mesothelioma can impact negatively on treatment options, since an early diagnosis is a key to achieving a better cure for the patient.

With the fact that patients are now getting older and are often diagnosed at a late stage of the disease. It becomes more and more urgent to use asbestos surveyors to carry out asbestos surveys.

It seems that other countries like Australia have done things differently when it comes to deal with asbestos related diseases. The Australian government actually committed millions of pounds for a research program which would help people suffering from those diseases.

It is very easy to find a company specializing in asbestos management. They would usually also do legionella risk assessment and asbestos awareness training.

Construction Journal Reports Mesothelioma Deaths To Peak By 2015??

by Peter Kent

Working in the construction industry can be a dangerous job, as the number of fatalities and injuries continue to rise and are accounting for one-third of all employment fatalities, according to the most recent 2007/2008 Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) statistics. However, one of the most dangerous and hidden killers of construction industry employees may actually be the development of mesothelioma cancer, according to an October 2008 issue of Contract Journal.

The journal reported that of the several reasons construction workers die on the job include the following:

* falls from height
* moving or falling objects
* moving machinery
* slips and trips
* asbestos exposure

Of the mesothelioma and asbestosis deaths, the HSE reports that, "in 2006 there were 111 deaths from asbestosis and 2,056 from mesothelioma and the HSE expects deaths from mesothelioma to peak at some point between current levels and 2,450 at some time before 2015." An additional report from the HSE found that in the United Kingdom alone, there were approximately 4,000 deaths from mesothelioma each year, with a large portion of this number likely deriving from employees within the construction industry.

Mesothelioma cancer is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers and asbestos dust. Asbestos, which was derived from a mineral known as vermiculite, was heavily mined and valued within the construction industry for its fire-retardant qualities as well as its inexpensive costs for mass production. The Occupation and Safety Health Administration (OSHA) describes asbestos in the construction industry as a "a group of naturally occurring, fibrous minerals with high tensile strength, flexibility, and resistance to heat, chemicals and electricity." It was used, according to OSHA, as part of the following products within the construction industry:

* sprayed-on fireproofing
* pipe insulation
* drywall joint compounds
* roofing felts and shingles
* ceiling tiles
* fire-resistant drywall
* acoustical products
* cement pipe and sheet
* floor tiles

Asbestos and Construction

While OSHA has developed standards for the construction industry as per the Occupational Standards Safety Act of 1970, the industry remains unregulated to a degree. For example, a recent report from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) found that a standard U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) check in Florida revealed thousands of falsified documents for individuals employed to remove asbestos. It is a legal requirement that individuals who are in charge of asbestos removal receive authentic certification for their employment. However, thousands of documents had been forged with false or illegally obtained social security numbers.

Developing Mesothelioma Litigation

Individuals who have suffered from the debilitating condition of mesothelioma cancer could potentially qualify for a return of monetary compensation with the development of a mesothelioma lawsuit. If costly medical bills become too much for an individual who is suffering from this rare and painful condition, they may be able to discuss litigation with a knowledgeable mesothelioma attorney.

Effective Peritoneal Mesothelioma Treatment Options

By Dennis Hennry

Most great cases of mesothelioma are either in pleural or peritoneal form. Mesothelioma is not such a forgiving disease. Many people that contract the disease have been known to live for only a a year and not more.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is rare and quite different from the other type of mesothelioma, its said to affect the abdominal lining(peritoneum). Peritoneal mesothelioma take up only 30% of all the mesothelioma cases reported.

The disease takes such a long time to develop and with symptoms that are quite similar to many other less serious types of ailments. When a person is diagnosed their chances of surviving the disease are very small. The disease is said to be so lethal to the point that survival chances are limited to just a few months. But fortunately peritoneal mesothelioma is treatable and the treatment largely depends on the cancer stage, Age and overall health of the patient. But of course if detected in its early stages treatment can increase your survival chances ten fold.

Treatment options for peritoneal mesothelioma include>

Surgery> surgery is the most common form of treatment option for malignant types of mesothelioma. The Doctor removes part of the lining for the abdomen and some of the tissue around it. Surgery depends largely on the extent the cancer has spread in the body.

Below are 2 of the surgical procedures administered to peritoneal mesothelioma patients.

Pleurectomy: A surgery is conducted to remove the abdomen lining and and some of the tissue surrounding it. This procedure is performed for a variety of disorders including pleural effusion, malignant pleural mesothelioma, and trauma.

Pleurectomy/decortication: A surgery is conducted to remove a a part of the abdomen lining(peritoneal) and as much of the tumor mass as possible. This procedure can be performed to reduce pain caused by the tumor mass. This form of surgery can be generally aimed at relieving symptoms, such as recurrent ascites or bowel obstruction.

Chemotherapy: This type of treatment is administered to help kill the cancerous cells. Chemotherapy can be taken in the form of pills or through syringes. Chemotherapy is also known as systematic treatment because the drug enters the bloodstream, travels through the body, and can kill cancer cells throughout the body.

Radiotherapy: This form of treatment is administered in the form of High-energy x-rays, gamma rays, neutrons, and other sources of radiation are used to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors.

Studies have shown that using only a single one of the treatments listed above have listed to fail to improve the conditions of the patients. Instead combining all of the above options has been known to improve the patents chances of surviving.

Get to learn more about ... peritoneal mesothelioma treatment and how you can diagnose it. Plus get to learn about the stages the disease takes as this is very important especially when it comes to treating the disease.

Can Fires Cause Mesothelioma Cancers?

By Gary Ng

Every year, fires occur throughout the world regardless of where you live in. Despite several initiatives as well as government intervention effects to promote fire safety education along with proper adoption of current fire fighting technology, fires still take place resulting in loss of lives as well as property. But can it cause cancer? In particular, mesothelioma cancer?

Studies have shown that whenever fires occur, several by-products are created typically existing in the form of carbon particles along with whichever material is on fire. And depending on the type of material on fire, this will definitely have an effect on the amount of carbon generation as well as rate of flame spread (ie, how fast the rate of fire can progress). And if you're not adequately protected and happen to be in the path of the smoke generated, then chances are that you would pretty much inhale a large component of these poisonous substances. While temporary exposure may not have a significant impact on your health, being caught in an environment with no way to escape will definitely have an effect on your health status. Apart from collapsing due to smoke inhalation due to a lack of oxygen in the environment, subsequent recovery along with rehabilitation efforts maybe rather tough as a result of the large amount of carbon particles inhaled.

Unlike smokers who may suffer from cancer over a prolonged period of indulgence, one will not necessarily be a victim of cancer simply because he or she was involved in a fire situation. But, for those of us who are required to be constantly exposed to the effects of fire as a result of our occupation, then you definitely need to take all available precautions to minimize its effects on your health. And yes, studies have shown that cancer can occur for those who work in such occupations due to prolonged inhalation effects and worse still, where no proper personnel protective equipment is used.

But what about mesothelioma cancers? I have explained in my earlier article, "Mesothelioma and Asbestos Side Effects", that mesothioma cancers occur as a result of asbestos exposure mainly due to excessive inhalation of asbestos made by-products or materials. As such, you can assume that if you're ever caught in a prolonged fire scenario or environment where asbestos substances are involved, the chances of incurring mesothelioma cancers are there (although the level of exposure is dependent on various other factors as well). As a recap, typical asbestos made materials found in your homes or offices (and at the factories) include false ceiling panels, sound insulation panel partition walls, raised flooring panels, and many others.

Given this situation, what specific precaution can you take to ensure that you are not overly exposed to these asbestos substances when a fire occurs at your workplace or home? Well, apart from donning a breathing apparatus set (if you know how to use it or if your office has one) or an escape hood, your minimal but temporary level of protection would be to cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief, and to stay well below the smoke level by adopting a baby crawl position all the way out of the building. That's about as minimal a precautionary level you can adapt when all else is not available and you're caught in a fire scenario. And while on your way out, do not panic ans start to push everyone around, this only causes more distress and may cause you to lose focus as you try to evade the toxic environment.

Hopefully this should give you a clear concept on whether fires can cause mesothelioma cancers

Deaths Related to Mesothelioma On the Rise, Construction Journal Predicts

by Katie Kelley

Copyright (c) 2008 Katie Kelley
Construction employees have a difficult job filled with dangers, but one of those dangers that is often overlooked is that of mesothelioma cancer, which is a common killer of construction workers, according to statistics from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which were reported in an October 2008 issue of the construction journal, Contract Journal.

The journal reported that of the several reasons construction workers die on the job include the following:

* falls from height

* moving or falling objects

* moving machinery

* slips and trips

* asbestos exposure

Of the mesothelioma and asbestosis deaths, the HSE reports that, "in 2006 there were 111 deaths from asbestosis and 2,056 from mesothelioma and the HSE expects deaths from mesothelioma to peak at some point between current levels and 2,450 at some time before 2015."

When the exposure of fibers and dust occurs, an individual may develop mesothelioma cancer. Derived from vermiculite, asbestos was a prized mineral because of its ability to be inexpensively reproduced and its fire-retardant characteristics.

Asbestos is "a group of naturally occurring, fibrous minerals with high tensile strength, flexibility, and resistance to heat, chemicals and electricity," according to the Occupation and Safety Health Administration (OSHA)." OSHA describes the following asbestos uses in the construction world:

* sprayed-on fireproofing

* roofing felts and shingles

* ceiling tiles

* fire-resistant drywall

* acoustical products

* cement pipe and sheet

* floor tiles

Treatment Options for Mesothelioma

by Marko

In the recent times we have been hearing more about the Mesothelioma cases and this has become a concern for all of us. With the help of medical science we have been able to find various treatment options for Mesothelioma and also for other forms of cancer.

In this article, let's discuss about new forms of treatment. There have been many patients who have been cured with the help of chemotherapeutic agents. The other form of treatment is the photodynamic therapy. In this treatment photosensitive drugs are injected intravenously which helps in killing diseased cells in the body.

There is another method also which is being used worldwide which is known as immunotherapy, in some countries this is also known as biological therapy. In the immunotherapy method, immune system of patient's body is stimulated and modulated so that the cancer can be treated. Natural immune system of the human body is much more effective in fighting cancer. The medications which are used in this treatment are known as Biological Response Modifiers. Biological response modifiers are the natural components of body's immune system but nowadays there have been many companies which are manufacturing synthetic biological response modifiers.

The third type of therapy is known as Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. This method is used as an additional therapy along with other forms of treatment. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy can control Mesothelioma locally. In this type of treatment the radiation is concentrated in the region of tumor only.

The latest form of therapy is known as Gene therapy which is effective in many incurable diseases. In Gene therapy disease is treated at DNA level. There are two types of gene therapy, replacement gene therapy and Knockout gene therapy.

Replacement gene therapy: In this method the gene provoking the disease is replaced by a new gene.

Knockout gene therapy: The gene provokes the disease and then it is completely removed from the DNA.

Hence to get the proper treatment done you need to consult your physician and get the treatment started as soon as possible.

Lung Cancer- One of the Most Fatal Illnesses in the World

By David Urmann

Lung cancer is an ailment of unrestrained cell development in the lung tissues. This growth may lead to metastasis, spreading to the adjoining tissues and penetrating prematurely the lungs. It is the most popular cancer cause of death in men, and the second most common in women.

Frequent symptoms of lung cancer:
1. Continuous chest throbbing
2. Persistent coughs that become severe
3. Shortness of breath, puffing, or huskiness
4. Constant troubles with pneumonia or bronchitis
5. Coughing up blood
6. Inflammation of the neck and face
7. Loss of appetite or significant weight loss
8. Exhaustion

Types of Lung Cancers:

A. Small-cell lung cancer occurs when malignant cells form in the lung tissues.
Small lung cancer has three different types, classified according to the forms of cells developing as cancer. These are:

1. Small cell carcinoma
2. Union of small cell and large cell carcinoma.
3. Joint small cell carcinoma.

These three kinds may contain many different types of cells. The cancer cells of all types may grow and multiply in different ways.

Stages of Small Cell Lung Cancer

Limited stage - cancer starts in the lung tissues, and in the adjacent lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are tiny, bean-shaped structures near the lungs.

Extensive Stage - cancer has propagated beyond the lungs to other parts of the body.
B. Large-cell lung cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the lungs.

Five types of large-cell lung cancer

The five types of large-cell lung cancer have differing varieties of cancer cells. The cancer cells of each category produce and multiply in unusual effects:

1. Squamous cell carcinoma - Cancer starts in the squamous cells, thin flat cells that appear like fish scales. It's called epidermoid carcinoma.
2. Large cell carcinoma - Cancer in which the cells are big and seem to be irregular when examined under a microscope.
3. Adenosquamous carcinoma - Cancer that begins in cells. Cancer cells appear to be firm when inspected under a microscope.
4. Adenocarcinoma - Cancer that begins in groups in glandular assets.
5. Undifferentiated carcinoma - Cancer cells that do not seem to be normal. They spread fast.

Treatment:

1. Surgery - Surgery is the ideal medication for lung cancer. The body is normally opened up for the lungs to be treated directly.
2. Radiation is a common treatment for lung cancer. Radiation therapy utilizes high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells. It distresses cells only in the treated area.

a. External radiation is the most common radiation treatment for people with lung cancer. Radiation comes from a huge apparatus outside your body. Mainly people go to the hospital or clinic for treatment. Treatments are typically 5 days a week for more than a few weeks.

b. Internal radiation is rare. Radiation is released from a seed, wire, or another device, to the body.

Treatment of Large-Cell Lung Cancer:

• Chemotherapy - This is cancer treatment making use of drugs to prevent the increase of cancer cells. Drugs are either taken by mouth or injected in the veins and muscles to destroy cancer cells. These drugs go into the bloodstream to treat cancer cells in the body. When chemotherapy is placed straight in the spinal column, an organ, or a body cavity like the abdomen, these drugs generally distress cancer cells in those parts.
• Laser therapy - Laser is used to destroy cancer cells.

Here's What You Probably Don't Know About Lung Cancer

by Jenni Snook

If you experience shortness of breath, and similar symptoms, it is absolutely necessary to familiarize yourself with lung cancer. Lung cancer is a condition in which abnormal cells begin to accumulate and spread in the lungs. In the early stages of this disease, it is not common to experience a lot of symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, the symptoms become more and more evident. If you learn about the lung cancer symptoms early on, it may be possible to prevent the spread of the abnormal cells in this area of the body.

While cancer in the lungs has been deemed as one of the leading causes of death in individuals, it has also been deemed as one of the most preventable types of disease. This cancer is related to the choice that many people make and that is smoking. While there are cases of this type of cancer occurring in a nonsmoker, these cases are relatively rare. Most that develop this condition not only smoke, but are genetically at risk for the disease as well. There are many cases in which a person who has never smoked acquires this type of cancer. Most of these cases involve those that have been exposed to second hand smoke on a regular basis throughout their lifetime.

There are a number of symptoms of cancer in the lungs. The following represents some of the most common symptoms that may be experienced:

1. Many people will start to develop a cough that occurs on a regular basis.

2. For many, this cough will go away, but for the ones that continue to experience the cough, concerns should be evaluated by a medical professional.

3. For many, this type of cancer makes itself known by pain that is felt in the chest area. This is often a dull pain, but pain that never seems to really go away on its own.

4. Many who have found that they have this condition have discovered that they have shortness of breath on a regular basis. This is typically caused by a growth in and around the lung area that is considered to be abnormal.

5. Having regular infections that involve the respiratory system may also be an indication that cancer is present in the lungs. These infections may include mild to severe bronchitis, or even pneumonia in some instances.

In conclusion, as stated here, lung cancer typically occurs in individuals who smoke on a regular basis. However, secondhand smoke and similar culprits can result in an individual who does not smoke to acquire the condition. If you find that you have a high chance of developing lung cancer, it is important that you learn all that you are able to about the condition. This way, you can work closely with your doctor to ensure that your risk factors are reduced and that you are treated in time if abnormal cell development does occur.

Chemotherapy Effectiveness Studied for Mesothelioma Patients

by Peter Kent

Although mesothelioma cancer has no current cure, many medical professional believe that chemotherapy can be a successful treatment of symptom control of the condition, however, this continues to be debated, according to a study from The Lancet, a British Journal.
Researchers studied 409 patients all of which were suffering from malignant pleural mesothelioma in different parts of the world. The patients were randomly assigned an active symptom control treatment or a treatment that included an active control treatment with one of two chemotherapy medications. According to the study, "the active symptom control treatments included steroids, bronchodilators, analgesic medications and palliative radiotherapy."

Following the study, the patients with both treatment options were compared and, according to researchers, "the addition of chemotherapy to active symptom control presented no significant benefit or advances in survival rates or quality of life" among mesothelioma victims.

Diagnosing and Understanding Chemotherapy, Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a disease in which malignant cancer cells develop in a thin layer of tissue that lines the chest cavity covering the lungs, which is also known as the pleura, or the peritoneum, which is the tissue lining the abdomen and most of the organs, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

The American Cancer Society (ACS) describes chemotherapy as a treatment for cancer; it is often given to a patient when cancerous cells spread rapidly to healthy cells.

Doctors must adequately evaluate a patients age, health and stage of cancer prior to administering chemotherapy. For mesothelioma patients, chemotherapy is not a curative method of treatment, but is actually administered to mesothelioma patients for several reasons including the following:

* stop growth and spreading of a cancer, to control the cancer

* minimize or shrink tumors - this method is also known as neoadjuvant chemotherapy

* palliative chemotherapy in which pain and other symptoms are meant to be reduced

* the destruction of microscopic disease that remains after a surgical procedure, also known as adjuvant chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is administered either as a catheter placed into a large vein in the body or a catheter attached as a port that is placed into the chest area under the skin for a period of time.

Living With Mesothelioma

Unfortunately, victims of mesothelioma continue to receive setbacks for their life-threatening condition, as there are currently no successful treatments for the deadly cancer.

However, an individual has the opportunity to participate in an array of clinical trial treatment groups as well as the opportunity to develop a mesothelioma lawsuit to derive monetary compensation as a means of repayment for the condition, which is often associated with extremely expensive medical bills.

Speaking with a qualified medical attorney who can offer a free legal consultation as to the creation of mesothelioma litigation can offer a mesothelioma victim peace of mind and insight into overcoming the financial burden of their condition.

The History of Asbestos Use

by Marc Dean

Asbestos was called the "miracle mineral" by the Greeks especially because it could withstand heat. Due to this characteristic of this element, it was widely used in the construction industry until the late 1900s. Until recently, the bad effects of using this material weren't known to the public, but when it came to light, it was too late. By the time the authorities found out that it was a killer, countless number of innocents had lost their lives in the fight against asbestos poisoning. The inhalation of asbestos fibers commonly causes mesothelioma, lung cancer, and also asbestosis.
Asbestos has killed many millions in the past couple of centuries since its heat resistant properties were discovered and asbestos was mined in many countries. It was very late when the health departments in all the countries found out that their miracle mineral was actually a killer mineral that had claimed the lives of millions of people. Many cases have been filed over the decades against those responsible for causing countless number of people to have lost their lives and health by making them work in asbestos mines and mills. The estimated total cost of the asbestos litigations in the United States of America alone is over 250 billion dollars.

It was widely used in the construction industry all over the world as it was heat resistant, flexible, durable, and even chemical resistant. But to decide whether the use of a certain material should be made legal or illegal depends on weighing its pros and cons. In this case, the cons far outweigh the pros. Inhalation of asbestos fibers has sparked the birth of a cancer called mesothelioma in humans which according to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) had claimed the lives of almost one hundred thousand Americans in 1999 alone. They recommended considering it as an epidemic of the worst kind.

The federal court houses in the United States have been dealing with claims by asbestos victims and their families for decades. The court houses are stunned by the number of asbestos law related claims which range in the hundreds of thousands. What does bother the court houses in the United States is the number of asbestos related cases that they will be seeing in the future as asbestos related problems surface only after 20-50 years of exposure. The Fairness of Asbestos Compensation Act which was brought out in 1999 was used to determine if the numerous plaintiffs who were filing law suits were indeed suffering from asbestos related illness.

The asbestos litigation is the most expensive and longest mass tort in the history of US court houses. The numbers of defendants are almost 10,400 but the numbers of claimants are almost a million with the number growing with each passing day. With the number of such litigations piling up in court houses all over the United States, the country issued the Asbestos Ban and Phase Out Rule in 1989. Many countries followed this path in banning its import and use to safe guard their people. Though developed countries have banned its use many developing countries are still using it.

Detailed Information on Mesothelioma

by Alicia Stock

Malignant mesothelioma, also known as mesothelioma cancer is a deadly cancer that affects the lining of the lung (pleura), the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum), and the lining of the heart (pericardium). The most familiar type of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma, while pericardial mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma are less frequent. Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles. The main cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, although other factors such as smoking may result in additional complications.
Smoking modern cigarettes does not seem to enlarge the risk of mesothelioma. Simian virus 40 (SV40) may act as a cofactor in the development of mesothelioma. There are five common types of mesothelioma. Four of are malignant cancers, and one is a benign condition. Pleural Mesothelioma type of mesothelioma develops in the lining of the lungs, known as the pleura. It is the most common form of malignant mesothelioma. Peritoneal Mesothelioma form of mesothelioma develops in the lining of the abdominal cavity. Pericardial Mesothelioma form of mesothelioma develops in the lining of the heart, known as the pericardium.

Testicular Mesothelioma is the infrequent type of malignant mesothelioma; to date, there have been less than 100 proof cases. Testicular mesothelioma develops in the tunica vaginalis of the testicles. Benign Mesothelioma benign form of mesothelioma most commonly develops in the pleura. This is the only form of mesothelioma for which full cure and recovery is a probable outcome, though it may be a precursor of future asbestos-related problems. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and abdominal pain and swelling due to a buildup of fluid in the abdomen.

Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may comprise bowel obstruction, blood clotting irregularities, anemia, and fever. Treatment for mesothelioma depends on the sites of the cancer, the phase of the disease, and the patient's age and normal health. Surgery is a common treatment for mesothelioma. For cancer of the pleura (pleural mesothelioma), a lung may be removed in an operation called a pneumonectomy. Sometimes part of the diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs that helps with breathing, is also removed. Radiotherapy may be used as part of treatment to try to cure mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Prevention Measures

by Gary Ng

It's now generally known that the main cause of mesothelioma cancer is essentially due to exposure (both direct as well as cross contamination) of asbestos elements. Such elements or materials (depending on its physical state) can be formally found in common fittings as well as in your surrounding environment.
While one can easily say that workers engaged in certain industries or trade handling or working with asbestos materials should be adequately protected. Specifically, what level of protection as well as precaution should be undertaken?

Before we go further let's look at the work station environment you are currently deployed at: Is it naturally ventilated (as in a workplace with generous amount of window openings) or mechanically ventilated (is your workplace air-conditioned or provided with other means of positive pressure ventilation)? Is every staff well spaced out? Is the machinery used by each staff well spaced out as well?

Your work environment needs to be adequately assessed as this will next have an influence on the level of personal protection you'll need to provide for your staff or yourself (depending whether you're working in a large organization or whether you're self employed). Generally, a work environment which has work stations or desks located too close to one another, is in a humid room, or situated in a humid state will affect the propagation of asbestos particles.

Ideally, a well balanced form of workplace ventilation should be practiced. While air-conditioning the whole workplace maybe costly in the long run and thus not feasible, this form of balance can be compensated with adequate window openings properly planned out with your contractor or space planner. In addition, the choice of lighting also plays a part in influencing the room temperature. Do note that certain light fixtures do generate a greater amount of heat particularly with lots of them located within the same compartment.

The rate of release of asbestos particles is not only dependent on the room temperature, but is also dependent on the level of work being exercised upon. By this, we're referring to the rate of production of such asbestos components (such as gypsum board manufacturing, etc.). While it may not be prudent to slow down the rate of production in the name of workplace safety and health (then again, it depends on who and where you're working for), the provision of suitable personal protective equipment (or PPE) shall come into play.

At the minimal level, a proper individually-fitted N95 level face mask along with safety goggles should be provided for the upper chest level, followed by proper safety shoes along with industrial-grade work gloves for the limbs. The rest of the body should be covered in a proper overall. This is in line with general OSHA requirements with regards to managing or working with substances that have a propagating effect and minimizes entrance of asbestos particles to through your breathing extremities. With all this in place, you'll now start to understand why your workplace needs to be properly ventilated, not just to minimize the spread of asbestos particles, but also for the sake of personal work comfort which will also influence an individual's work concentration level when operating a machinery or cutting tool.

Prior toleaving your workplace, ensure that all the PPE listed above is properly stored in a well ventilated designated storage room and your overalls are sent for washing. Needless to say, it would be strongly advisable that you and your staff take a shower before heading out as well.

These are just some of the preventive measures one can consider in minimizing the occurrence of mesothelioma cancer .

The Harmful Consequences Of Exposure to Asbestos

It has been said that all levels of asbestos exposure are harmful to the body. This is due to the fact that just one fiber can bring severe harm. Workers are most at risk of contracting asbesto related diseases due to poorly controlled, and often unrecognized, exposure to harmful materials in their daily labors.

Asbestos related diseases are responsible for 30 deaths per day, or 10,000 deaths per year. These diseases kill thousands more people than other types of cancers that get much more attention from the government and pharmaceutical companies. The combination of asbestos exposure and cigarette smoking is especially deadly. The Surgeon General indicates that people who smoke and were exposed to asbestos on the job are 90 times as likely to develop lung cancer as people who smoke but were never exposed to asbestos. Lung cancer, attributable to cigarette smoking (which has a similar latency period) has been well-documented, less attention has been focused on asbestos-related lung cancers.

As with the development of mesothelioma after exposure to asbestos, lung cancer symptoms appear many years after initial exposure to the hazardous mineral. Anyone who suspects they may have been exposed to asbestos and are experiencing any symptoms of lung cancer should seek the advice of a medical physician. Continued exposure can increase the amount of fibers that remain in the lung and the body may not be able to naturally expel them.The time from exposure to the onset of asbestos related diseases is quite long. It may take 25 to 40 years for a disease to be detected. The severity of the disease depends upon the duration of exposure to asbestos and the amount inhaled.

Asbestos-related diseases commonly affect people who worked for long periods of time in professions where asbestos was used, as well as their families due to secondary asbestos exposure. The proclamation urged public awareness about the prevalence of asbestos-related diseases and the dangers of asbestos exposure.

Cases of mesothelioma have occurred in spouses and children of asbestos workers whose only exposures were from the dust brought home on the clothing of family members who worked with asbestos. Approximately 1,500 cases of malignant mesothelioma are reported annually, and 80 percent of these cases are caused by asbestos exposure. The average latency and the diagnosis of malignant asbestos and the diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma is 35 to 40 years, with most deaths occurring in persons over 60 years of age.

Asbestos Related Diseases

by Phil Phlorum

Mesothelioma's Effect on Families

by Patricia Woloch

Though not directly exposed to asbestos in high concentrations, family and friends of workers who are heavily exposed are at some risk, as evidence shows. This contamination can come from the clothing of a someone who works with asbestos, living near an asbestos mine, plant or other location, breathing the air in those locations where asbestos exists is large quantities, drinking liquids that have been exposed to asbestos, eating foods grown in dirt or otherwise ingesting dirt that has been exposed to asbestos. Ultimately, exposing your family and friends to asbestos might cause one or more of them to develop mesothelioma many years later.

Exposure of Children

Asbestos fibers can be found in dirt and water supplies near workplaces that mine asbestos or use it extensively in industry. Children are known to drink more fluid per body size, and eat more dirt than adults. Children may ingest dirt by eating it directly, eating foods with dirty hands, or eating food that was dropped on the ground. Children's lung structure is different than adults, and their fragile respiratory and digestive systems may be more susceptible to inhaled or ingested asbestos particles than an adult's. Since mesothelioma does not show up until many years after the first exposure, 20 to 50 years by most estimates, it is difficult to estimate whether children are at greater risk than adults, though it is reasonable to consider this possibility.

Resources, Income and Health Care Benefits

If you become unable to work before reaching retirement age, you and your family will suffer the loss of your income and health benefits. Treatment for mesothelioma is expensive, so, even if you qualify for social security disability (SSD) and Medicare coverage, you will go many months, possibly years without income or Medicare coverage before your social security disability is approved, and another 25 months before you are eligible for Medicare.

If your social security disability application is approved, your income will be less than half what you are accustomed to earning, and Medicare does not cover all costs. You will have to pay insurance premiums for Medicare part A, B, (or C) and D, further reducing your usable income.

If you have not worked 40 quarters by the time you become disabled, you will not qualify for social security disability, but might qualify for supplemental security disability insurance (SSDI), and state Medicaid. SSDI is a significantly smaller income than SSD, and Medicaid is usually more limited medical coverage than Medicare, though there is no premium.

Quality of Life and Relationships

In addition to exposing family and friends to contamination from which they might later suffer health consequences, their lives, as well as these relationships, will be affected by your illness.

• If your wife was not formerly employed, she may need to go to work
• She will not be as available to care for you
• If your wife was already working, your income will be reduced to what she can bring in
• You are likely to have medical expenses that are not covered, even by Medicare
• You may need additional help with activities of daily living, such as dressing, fixing meals, taking medications, picking up prescriptions, traveling to the doctor, and more
• You may not be able to play with your children or grandchildren, or enjoy the company of friends and family as others your age might do
• You may find that fewer of them visit for social reasons
• Many friends, as well as some family members, will drift away, not knowing how to relate to you anymore

If you are fortunate enough to have good friends, they will likely be willing to help you, but your relationships will change along with your activities. Mesothelioma will cause your life will change in every way possible.

Vitamin C Could Affect Mesothelioma Treatments

by Peter Kent

Research from physicians with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York have discovered that the consumption of vitamin C supplements among cancer patients, including those with mesothelioma, may be causing negative effects on a mesothelioma patient by reducing the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs and treatments.

The research was published in a recent issue of the journal Cancer Research where details were reported including the fact that anywhere between 30 and 70 percent fewer cancer cells were effectively treated with chemotherapy upon the administration of vitamin C to cancer patients.

According to the study, mesothelioma cancer victims should be very aware of the potential risk of consuming vitamin C during chemotherapy treatments because achieving a positive outcome during mesothelioma treatments is difficult enough without additional setback.

Chemotherapy and Mesothelioma Cancer

Chemotherapy is a form of treatment for cancer and can be administered in a number of ways, via a pill or through an needle injection. Chemotherapy can is also administered either intrapleurally, which is directly into the chest cavity, or intraperitoneally, which is an injection of chemotherapy drugs directly into the abdominal cavity, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Chemotherapy is currently the main treatment for mesothelioma and can be given at any stage of mesothelioma. According to the ACS, the following are drugs used in combination during chemotherapy:

* methotrexate and vincristine
* cisplatin, vinblastine and mitomycin
* cisplatin and doxorubicin
* doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide and cisplatin

During chemotherapy, there are several additional side effects that occur but will usually disappear after treatment is stopped. The ACS describes the following as chemotherapy side effects:

* nausea
* vomiting
* loss of appetite
* loss of hair
* mouth sores
* bleeding or bruising after minor cuts/injuries
* fatigue or shortness of breath

Living With Mesothelioma

Unfortunately, the outcome for mesothelioma cancer patients is rather grim as it is difficult to stop or reverse severe scarring that may have occurred within the lining of the lungs while the condition remained dormant. However, new treatments continue to be studied and researched and the potential for a mesothelioma patient being able to participate in clinical trials that may offer a more positive outcome is becoming more available as light continues to be shed on this one-time rare condition.

In order for a patient to receive and pay for costly treatments, it may be necessary for a mesothelioma victim to consult an experienced mesothelioma attorney who can provide a free legal consultation regarding a mesothelioma lawsuit. Building a mesothelioma case may provide a return of monetary compensation as mesothelioma is considered a preventable disease. Many individuals have been exposed to asbestos fibers and dust, which are the main causes of mesothelioma cancer, through work within the construction industry, naval industry and mining.

The Risks of Mesothelioma Asbestos Exposure

by Peter Kingston

Asbestos is the biggest work place killer today. Those who have worked with asbestos or who are regularly in contact with someone who has are at risk from asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. All these are fatal respiratory diseases which are extremely difficult to cure.
Some building materials that may contain asbestos materials are vinyl floor tiles; patching compounds textured paints, furnace and stovepipe, insulation, stove door gaskets, roofing shingles, cement, and siding material.Asbestos was most commonly used until early 1970s in various home appliances, such as toasters, clothes dryers, and hair dryers.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer of the Pleura (lung cancer) and Peritoneum (abdomen cancer). Mesothelioma has been shown to have a strong association with the crocidolite variety of asbestos. Pleural mesothelioma, the most common manifestation of asbestos exposure, is well-circumscribed plaques of dense collagen, often containing calcium. Peritoneum Mesothelioma may or may not contain asbestos bodies and rarely do they occur in persons who have no history or evidence of asbestos exposure.

Following people are more vulnerable to Asbestos-related diseases:

Works in industries and mines Construct Buildings Make ceilings Perform Ceiling insulation

Apart from these persons all other persons who live in houses having asbestos contaminated building material or are involved in use or repair of appliances and products that contain asbestos can also contact asbestos diseases. This makes asbestos home testing a necessary process for all homes that are built before 1980s and all the people who are using appliances and or products that could contain asbestos materials.

Health Hazards Of Asbestos

Undamaged Asbestos cannot cause any health hazards.

The risk of Mesothelioma is reported to be high in those cases where occupational exposure to asbestos is combined with cigarette smoking. Mesothelioma usually does not appear until after 5 to 10 years of exposure. Mesothelioma causes mechanical irritation and in the advanced cases, there may be symptoms of clubbing of fingers, and cardiac distress. The survival time of Mesothelioma patients is generally ranges from 12 months to 2 years of diagnosis and very few survive longer than 2 years.The following measures can be useful in preventing occurrences of Mesothelioma.

There are no safe levels of asbestos exposure and even short-term exposure to asbestos creates a possibility of your catching any disease caused by asbestos.

Removing Asbestos From Home

It is not advisable to perform an asbestos test in your home. You need qualified professional to test the presence of asbestos in your home. Asbestos abatement is the process of determining the status of asbestos material and taking corrective measures for preventing risk of asbestos exposure. It is not necessary that you have to remove all the asbestos material from your home. You can also opt for economic measures such as enclosures and encapsulation for preventing the risk of asbestos exposure even without removing the Asbestos Containing Materials.

Essential Facts of Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure

by Gary Ng

Despite the efforts of numerous health agencies throughout the world in trying to educate the public on the definition and effects of mesothelioma, it is unfortunate that there still exist a large majority of the local population in trying to comprehend such efforts. With this article, I hope that certain facts can be spelt out much more clearly in as simple terminology as possible.
To start off, mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which malignant or cancerous cells are found in the mesothelium, a protective sac that covers most of our body's internal organs. At present, statistics have proven that a majority of people who suffer from mesothelioma, have had first contact with materials known as asbestos, in the course of their work or exposure.

Mesothelioma (or cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. The known effect is that invasion and damage to nearby tissues and organs can occur. The cancer cells can also spread from their original location to other parts of the body. And very often, mesothelioma begins in the pleura or peritoneum. The pleura is the membrane that typically surrounds the lungs and lines the wall of the chest cavity, while the peritoneum is the tissue that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity. In addition, the pericardium covers and protects the heart, while the tissue surrounding the male internal reproductive organs is called the tunica vaginalis testis. For the female, this will be known as the tunica serosa uteri.

While it has been reported specifically in the United States alone that the occurrence of mesothelioma has been at a rate of 2000 cases per year in the last 20 years, there maybe more unreported cases that have gone undetected and therefore, not captured within official records. Typically, mesothelioma affects mainly the male gender, but although (as mentioned above) this form of cancer has affected mainly those in direct contact with asbestos material in the course of their work, there have also been occurrences to those who have had no direct exposure to asbestos.

Before we go on further, we need to be clear on where asbestos comes from. Essentially, asbestos refers to a group of minerals that occur naturally as masses of strong, flexible fibers that can be separated into thin threads and woven. Asbestos is often found in construction related materials such as cement, roofing materials, flooring products, etc. How asbestos gets into the human system, is when during the manufacturing process, where there is no strict control on the handling process, the particles generated from asbestos will float in the air and maybe inhaled by individuals, thus causing serious health problems. This therefore gives rise to other forms of cancer and one of them, mesothelioma.

Historically, mesothelioma was discovered particularly after the World War Two, as part of the industrialization process and increased war efforts. Millions of Americans were believed to have been exposed to asbestos dust particles in their course of work. And when these folks return home to their loved ones, it is believed that the dust particles which had remained on their work attires were subsequently inhaled by their family members, thus creating a form of "cross contamination" effect. While the occupational safety and health act today has restricted the amount of asbestos workers can be exposed to, the risk has obviously not been fully mitigated and the occurrence of mesothelioma is still possible.

To minimize exposure as well as cross contamination, workers in such industries should change out before leaving their workstations and showering. This concept is similar to exposure during a chemical fallout where the process of decontamination is deployed.
