The Risks of Mesothelioma Asbestos Exposure

by Peter Kingston

Asbestos is the biggest work place killer today. Those who have worked with asbestos or who are regularly in contact with someone who has are at risk from asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. All these are fatal respiratory diseases which are extremely difficult to cure.
Some building materials that may contain asbestos materials are vinyl floor tiles; patching compounds textured paints, furnace and stovepipe, insulation, stove door gaskets, roofing shingles, cement, and siding material.Asbestos was most commonly used until early 1970s in various home appliances, such as toasters, clothes dryers, and hair dryers.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer of the Pleura (lung cancer) and Peritoneum (abdomen cancer). Mesothelioma has been shown to have a strong association with the crocidolite variety of asbestos. Pleural mesothelioma, the most common manifestation of asbestos exposure, is well-circumscribed plaques of dense collagen, often containing calcium. Peritoneum Mesothelioma may or may not contain asbestos bodies and rarely do they occur in persons who have no history or evidence of asbestos exposure.

Following people are more vulnerable to Asbestos-related diseases:

Works in industries and mines Construct Buildings Make ceilings Perform Ceiling insulation

Apart from these persons all other persons who live in houses having asbestos contaminated building material or are involved in use or repair of appliances and products that contain asbestos can also contact asbestos diseases. This makes asbestos home testing a necessary process for all homes that are built before 1980s and all the people who are using appliances and or products that could contain asbestos materials.

Health Hazards Of Asbestos

Undamaged Asbestos cannot cause any health hazards.

The risk of Mesothelioma is reported to be high in those cases where occupational exposure to asbestos is combined with cigarette smoking. Mesothelioma usually does not appear until after 5 to 10 years of exposure. Mesothelioma causes mechanical irritation and in the advanced cases, there may be symptoms of clubbing of fingers, and cardiac distress. The survival time of Mesothelioma patients is generally ranges from 12 months to 2 years of diagnosis and very few survive longer than 2 years.The following measures can be useful in preventing occurrences of Mesothelioma.

There are no safe levels of asbestos exposure and even short-term exposure to asbestos creates a possibility of your catching any disease caused by asbestos.

Removing Asbestos From Home

It is not advisable to perform an asbestos test in your home. You need qualified professional to test the presence of asbestos in your home. Asbestos abatement is the process of determining the status of asbestos material and taking corrective measures for preventing risk of asbestos exposure. It is not necessary that you have to remove all the asbestos material from your home. You can also opt for economic measures such as enclosures and encapsulation for preventing the risk of asbestos exposure even without removing the Asbestos Containing Materials.

Essential Facts of Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure

by Gary Ng

Despite the efforts of numerous health agencies throughout the world in trying to educate the public on the definition and effects of mesothelioma, it is unfortunate that there still exist a large majority of the local population in trying to comprehend such efforts. With this article, I hope that certain facts can be spelt out much more clearly in as simple terminology as possible.
To start off, mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which malignant or cancerous cells are found in the mesothelium, a protective sac that covers most of our body's internal organs. At present, statistics have proven that a majority of people who suffer from mesothelioma, have had first contact with materials known as asbestos, in the course of their work or exposure.

Mesothelioma (or cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. The known effect is that invasion and damage to nearby tissues and organs can occur. The cancer cells can also spread from their original location to other parts of the body. And very often, mesothelioma begins in the pleura or peritoneum. The pleura is the membrane that typically surrounds the lungs and lines the wall of the chest cavity, while the peritoneum is the tissue that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity. In addition, the pericardium covers and protects the heart, while the tissue surrounding the male internal reproductive organs is called the tunica vaginalis testis. For the female, this will be known as the tunica serosa uteri.

While it has been reported specifically in the United States alone that the occurrence of mesothelioma has been at a rate of 2000 cases per year in the last 20 years, there maybe more unreported cases that have gone undetected and therefore, not captured within official records. Typically, mesothelioma affects mainly the male gender, but although (as mentioned above) this form of cancer has affected mainly those in direct contact with asbestos material in the course of their work, there have also been occurrences to those who have had no direct exposure to asbestos.

Before we go on further, we need to be clear on where asbestos comes from. Essentially, asbestos refers to a group of minerals that occur naturally as masses of strong, flexible fibers that can be separated into thin threads and woven. Asbestos is often found in construction related materials such as cement, roofing materials, flooring products, etc. How asbestos gets into the human system, is when during the manufacturing process, where there is no strict control on the handling process, the particles generated from asbestos will float in the air and maybe inhaled by individuals, thus causing serious health problems. This therefore gives rise to other forms of cancer and one of them, mesothelioma.

Historically, mesothelioma was discovered particularly after the World War Two, as part of the industrialization process and increased war efforts. Millions of Americans were believed to have been exposed to asbestos dust particles in their course of work. And when these folks return home to their loved ones, it is believed that the dust particles which had remained on their work attires were subsequently inhaled by their family members, thus creating a form of "cross contamination" effect. While the occupational safety and health act today has restricted the amount of asbestos workers can be exposed to, the risk has obviously not been fully mitigated and the occurrence of mesothelioma is still possible.

To minimize exposure as well as cross contamination, workers in such industries should change out before leaving their workstations and showering. This concept is similar to exposure during a chemical fallout where the process of decontamination is deployed.

Using Brachytherapy to treat Mesothelioma

by Research Analyst

What is a safer method of treatment for mesothelioma? Treatment and diagnosis can lead to many types of therapy. Brachytherapy is considered to be a safer method for treatment of the mesothelioma cancer, it does have side effects.
The type of brachytherapy used for treatment is called Radiotherapy which is ionizing radiation this type of radiation can be performed internally or externally to kill cancer cells. External treatment is done by use of a linear accelerator that is put into the body from outside the body cavity.

The radiation is a advanced form of treatment for mesothelioma and is placed either inside the cancer source or very close to it. inside the body the radiation emits rays killing the cancerous cells due to only killing up to a one inch diameter,the radiation must be placed close to the cancerous site.

A Team of Medical Scientist administer the Brachytherapy Treatment Those among the team are:

Radiation Oncologist - decides the area to be treated and mesothelioma treatment plan

Radiation Physicist - decides the best equipment to infuse the radiation with

Radiation Therapist - manually does the procedure, operating the equipment

Dosimetrist - decides the dosage to be given and distributes it to the patient

The different types of Brachytherapy
The two types of Brachytherapy for Mesothelioma are Temporary and Permanent

Temporary consists of placing radioactive seeds of radiation inside the body then taking them out after a specified time frame Permanent consists of placing radioactive radiation inside the body and leaving them after a period of time the radioactive radiation stops emitting and lay in the body.

What are the Brachytherapy side effects?

According to the Cancer Center Radiotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses energy carried by waves or a stream of particles that can alter a cancer cell's genetic material, rendering continued growth impossible.

So when cancer is treated by Brachytherapy -a sealed source radiotherapy and endocurietherapy in which radiation is delivered inside the area requiring treatment, this allows for precisely targeted cancer cells, so there is less damage to normal cells and therefore it generally causes fewer and less serious side effects than conventional radiotherapy. When used to treat a number of cancers, this therapy can be a highly effective tool and a vital component in a comprehensive treatment plan.

Asbestos Danger Asbestos

by mrlee

Asbestos Danger Asbestos is a type of mineral fiber that is regularly used as an wing to a change of products.
This article seeks to give you a solid knowledge base regarding the subject Asbestos Danger Asbestos matter at hand, no matter what your previous experience on the topic Asbestos Danger Asbestos .

However, as early as 1898, the United Kingdom's Chief examiner of Factories, in his yearly speech, learned Parliament about asbestos obnoxiouss: that is, the microscopic particles of fire curtain existing in the BB gun.

In 1906, the first asbestos deaths in British factories were downright by a British Parliamentary Commission. It appears that the asbestos fibers, when inhaled, can horn in the lungs and sense complications and diseases, such as asbestosis (scarring of the lung onion skin), mesothelioma (plague of the mesothelial lining of the lungs), and carcinoma of the larynx, stomach, pharynx, and colorectal part.

As a answer of these admired asbestos dangers, the use of the mineral in industries had to be clogged. Still, many of the structures and homes fixed together before or in the 1970s used asbestos, so the familiar obstacle of its shot in industries does not necessarily liberated you from asbestos dangers.

chapter I of Environmental Prorating of Buildings regularly embrace an asbestos check to establish if a structure or a diggings uses concretes inhibiting splendid array. Some familiar concoctions that may be prepense as a supply of asbestos dangers embrace: * Steam Pipes, fiber Pipes and Institutions policy of this oddball made in the 1970s are insulated with blankets or wafer-skeletal tapes made from asbestos curtain.

An asbestos curtain danger may rise if these supplies are wistful improperly, insufficient or repaired. * resistant stagger Tiles, Vinyl layer staggering and Adhesives resistant flummox flags are made with a combination of blacktop, rubber and vinyl fire curtain. These, along with vinyl page pits and adhesives, may matter splendid array oriented when the fibers are free in the airstream gun through scraping or polishing.

Moreover, the back of the envelope as deduction may also sense asbestos susceptible. * substance* Layer, delicate and Millboard These supplies are used for sheltering the furnaces and woodburning stoves and therefore inhibit splendid array. When curing or removing these appliances, asbestos danger occurs as the furs are free in the capsule gun. There can as well be asbestos danger if you slot, disregard, polish, drill or saw the insulation. Most construction supplies nowadays no longer process asbestos and instead use added selections in order to prevent asbestos danger.

Woman Suffers From Mesothelioma

Hurricanes Increase Risk of Asbestos Exposure

by Peter Kent
Individuals who have been affected by Hurricane Ike are still dealing with the after affects including exposure to asbestos fibers from destruction of homes caused by flooding.
According to the International Herald Tribune, following the hurricane, homes and roads were left with debris as well as a toxic sludge made of mud, human waste, lead, gasoline and asbestos in the wake of floodwaters, which have since receded. The potential for these fibers to dry and become airborne may be serious and could cause an increased risk of mesothelioma cancer among hurricane victims as well as nearby residents because of asbestos exposure.

What is Asbestos Exposure?

Asbestos fibers become airborne and cause the development of cancerous cells among victims. For years an exposed individual can live and behave as normal while the cancer remains dormant. Unfortunately, a mesothelioma victim has a slim survival rate the longer they have waited to diagnose their condition.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) described the following symptoms of mesothelioma:
* shortness of breath
* pain in the chest because of an accumulation of fluid
* weight loss
* abdominal pain
* bowel obstruction
* blood clotting abnormalities
* anemia
* fever

Diagnosing Mesothelioma Cancer

Unfortunately, mesothelioma cancer is considered such a rare condition, that it is often misdiagnosed for other similar diseases. The best way to diagnose mesothelioma cancer is to immediately speak with a medical professional upon any indication that exposure to asbestos has occurred.

It is important to set up a mesothelioma cancer screening if you feel you have been exposed to absestos. According to the England center for cancer research, Cancer Research UK, a number or all of the following procedures will likely be administered to narrow down the likelihood of a mesothelioma diagnosis:
* general physician examination
* blood tests
* chest X-ray or abdominal X-ray
* CT scan of chest/abdomen to determine swelling in body organs/lymph nodes
* biopsy of the pleura is done, also known as a thoracoscopy, in which a small incision is made the chest wall in which a video camera is inserted
* fluid drainage, also known as the thoracocentesis or abdoparacentesis), will help to relieve fluid from around the lugs or abdominal cavity for those with peritoneal mesothelioma

Uses for Asbestos

Asbestos has been classified as a human carcinogen because of the scarring of tissue and inflammation it can cause among its victims. Asbestos is a prevalent threat in America because of its extensive use and availability during the 20th century.

Asbestos was mined from the late 1800s up through World War II and was used for commercial use, according to the NCI:
* building and construction
* strengthening cement and plastics
* insulation
* roofing
* fireproofing
* sound absorption
* shipbuilding
* insulate boilers
* steam pipes
* hot water pipes
* vehicle brakeshoes
* vehicle clutch pads
* ceiling
* flooring
* paints/coatings
* tile
* adhesives
* plastics
* gardening materials
* talc-containing crayons

By the end of the 1970s after millions, potentially billions, of tons of asbestos had been used in products as well as homes, apartments, hospitals and elementary schools throughout America, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) finally banned the use of new asbestos in products and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for regulation and cleanup of asbestos.

Professional Mesothelioma Assistance

As millions of individuals remain potentially at risk for asbestos exposure across America it becomes important to be self-educated on the condition, its symptoms as well as diagnosing steps. Individuals who feel they may be suffering from mesothelioma cancer should contact not only a medical professional but also a mesothelioma attorney. Most legal consultations are free, which allows an individual to better understand the development of a mesothelioma case.

Mesothelioma, A Monster

by Judith

Mesothelioma is the name of a cancerous tumor which involves Mesothelioma cells of an organ. This is the type of cells that form a protective coating on lungs, heart and abdominal organs. The best known of these membranes is pleura, whose function is protect the lungs from rubbing against the thorax.

All cases of mesothelioma (cancer of the pleura) and lung cancer are caused due to inhalation of asbestos fibers. Approximately 10,000-15,000 cases are annually diagnosed worldwide.
The main cause of asbestos causing mesothelioma is because the fibers of asbestos remain airborne for long time and are transported by wind.

The symptoms of mesothelioma can be diagnosed after 15-40 years.

Symptoms of a mesothelioma: Mesothelioma spreads rapidly and the common symptoms are constant chest pain, having difficulty in breathing because fluid accumulates. The person may also get cough, fever, extreme fatigue and weight loss. This can be diagnosed through chest X-rays.

Usually the disease is treated by surgery, this can be avoided if the patients consult as soon as the symptoms occur.

New medical treatments against malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM)

The pemetrexed drug is the only that enhances the patients quality of life.

In the recent times, the medical science has been trying to find out different ways to cure this disease even if it is in its last stage, though they have got some success as they are able to treat this disease in the initial stage. We hope that the medical science can find out some way to cure this disease and free the man kind from this fatal disease.

Mesothelioma and Asbestos Lawyers

by Gary Ng

Asbestosis is a detrimentally complicated disease that often results in death. Asbestosis is very similar to having the inside of the lungs burned over a long period of time. Asbestos fibers, used for decades as fire-retardant and heat-resistant insulation materials, cause a rare form of cancer. Miniscule pieces of these fibers break off and float through the air. Asbestosis is a progressive disease which may develop fully in 7 to 9 years and may cause death as early as 13 years after the first exposure. In many cases, though, the latency period is 20 years or more.

Asbestos Law and claim responsibility do vary from state to state. Most states are, however, very similar to one another with the basic procedures. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral which has been used for a very long time to make various products. The substance is fire resistant and this is an essential property because it acts as an insulator. Asbestos is known as the miracle mineral for this reason. They are used in the manufacturing of numerous products such automobiles, building, construction, railroad, shipyard, factory and the like.

Mesothelioma lawyers are experienced professionals who have dealt with several successful mesothelioma lawsuits. Mesothelioma lawyers are in demand and graduating from a top law school will help you help others that are suffering. Mesothelioma lawyers are specialists who have been trained specifically in the field of mesothelioma lawsuits and mesothelioma settlements. They are therefore well equipped to deal with victims of this cancer, and can offer expert legal advice with regards to compensation and a settlement.

Mesothelioma lawyers are now part of many major legal firms and most will offer you a free case review. During this consultation, the lawyer can assess your case and provide a recommendation about how you should pursue your case. Mesothelioma lawyers are specialized asbestos attorneys who only provide legal assistance to those who suffer from malignant mesothelioma . Asbestos litigation revolves around all injuries incurred as a result of asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma lawyers are the best source of mesothelioma information to help take a stance and make a difference.

Pleural mesotheliomas are more common than peritoneal ones. Mesotheliomas are usually diffuse and malignant while a few cases are localized and are benign. Pleural mesothelomia has around four stages while peritoneal mesothelomia is not staged.

Mesothelioma - An Overview

by Edward

Mesothelioma is an incurable form of cancer, which is rather uncommon. It is caused by previous exposure to asbestos. If we go through the history of mesothelioma patients we can see that either they have worked on jobs where they had inhaled asbestos particles or they must have been exposed to asbestos dust or particles in other ways. These particles pierce the delicate internal organs like the lungs, intestine and even the heart. It also destroys mesothelium, the protective sack which produces fluid facilitating the proper movement of organs. Apart from this, it can develop cancerous tumors which spread all over the body.

There are different forms of Mesothelioma. Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common form. Peritoneal Mesothelioma stands second which affects the stomach and intestines. Another rarest form of Mesothelioma, called Pericardial Mesothelioma attacks the membrane lubricates in the heart during circulation. During the initial stages, people tend to mistake mesothelioma for pneumonia. How ever, the common symptoms are persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pains, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, swelling up of face and neck, coughing up blood, weight loss etc. Even though it is not compulsory that everyone who comes into contact with asbestos will develop the disease, keeping the risk factor in mind, it is better to consult the doctor on time which helps in early detection of the disease.

Normally mesothelioma is diagnosed in the later stages and it can be a serious blow to the family. Though research work continues incessantly there is no cure for the disease now. Mostly, the treatment is provided to lessen the severity of the symptoms of the disease. Doctors depend on some combinations of chemotherapy drugs and research scientists concentrate on finding ways and means for an early diagnosis of the fatal disease. In some cases surgery is performed on patients to remove tumors or an entire lung. Still most of them are treated with radiation or chemotherapy.

The reason someone develops the condition can be attributed to the negligence of the employers. The harmful impacts of asbestos and asbestos products are quite evident. Still, most of the employers pay scant respect regarding the health of the employees and do not offer adequate protection. It was in the 1970s that the public became aware of the dangers of the asbestos dust and fibers. Since then many employers have started giving protective clothing such as respirators, aprons, gloves and other necessary items to the hapless victims working in the field on a daily basis. But, these efforts are not at all sufficient and lot more has to be done to ensure the safety of the workers. The companies dealing with the production of asbestos or products containing asbestos have been subjected to numerous law suites owing to the irresponsible behavior of the employers. Most of these cases are filed by the unfortunate victims of the disease.

Gene Therapy for Mesothelioma

by Marko

The one of the deadliest disease, many fear and this is caused due to the exposure to asbestos - Mesothelioma. Today we are able to at least treat this cancer in some or the other way. It is difficult to treat such people who are in the acute stage of mesothelioma, but our medical science is still finding the easy ways to cure it.

In the recent times, there has been little hope with the new treatment to mesothelioma victims in Cancer Information, this is called gene therapy. In this type of therapy one attempts to decipher as to why proteins within certain cells are resilient to cancer while some cells do not. Previously it was believed that genes complete upon birth, and that they could not affect later in life. But this is not the truth. Sunlight, smoking and certain foods can also affect our DNA which further makes changes in our genetic code.

The another major cause of this disease is the exposure to asbestos, but genetic changes in a person also worsen it. In the gene therapy, cancer-causing genes are replaced with genes which are medically constructed to be destroyed when exposed to cancerous growth. These 'suicide genes' slow down the rapid replication of cancerous cells or may also stop the growth of the cancer cells. Many studies have been carried out to experiment with replacing the cancer generating genes with other genes susceptible to certain drugs. This would allow the cancer to be potentially eliminated with few side effects. With the help of this kind of treatment we can potentially eliminate with few side effects.

Gene therapy treatment cannot be assured of 100% safety as it is in the beginning stage and still many things have to be carried out. The medical science is still trying to find out other ways to cure and eliminate mesothelioma disease.

Mesothelioma Cancer Diagnosis - Taking a Sample

by judithscott

Diagnosing mesothelioma can be a bit difficult as symptoms are similar to those of lung cancer. Thought to have a fair diagnosis X-Rays, CT Scans, PET scans and MRI scans can be carried out.
However to get accurate conclusion, a physician usually recommends biopsy. Biopsy is a surgical procedure to collect tissue samples or fluid and further analyzed under microscope. Through biopsy test, type of cells can be determined so that appropriate treatment can be carried out. The biopsy procedure is carried out depending upon the affected area. If the patient is suffering from the accumulation of fluids in chest (pleural effusion), then a long hollow needle can be inserted in chest cavity and sample of fluid is aspirated. Same procedure is carried out if the person has fluid accumulation in abdomen or in heart area.

There are also different ways to take a sample tissue like to insert a needle in chest cavity and then rotated it, the tissue samples get collected as needle is taken out. However this procedure may prove dangerous as there is chance of tumor seeding along with the needle tract and may be radiation therapy can be applied. The tissue sample can also be obtained by a new technique called thoroscopy. In this type of procedure thoroscope (a telescope-like instrument connected to a video camera) is inserted through a small incision in the patient's chest and the physican can see tumor through thoroscope. With the aid of special forecep, a sample of the tumor can then be removed. This technique is usually done under a local anesthesia and is usually performed in the case of pleural mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma.

In peritoneal mesothelioma, laparoscopy is performed to obtain tumor sample. This procedure is similar to that of thoroscopy which is performed in abdominal cavity instead of chest. In this procedure tube is attached to video camera and is inserted in abdominal cavity through a small cut.

There are other different procedures also to get the sample tissues such as VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery), in this procedure several small cuts are made in the chest wall, a camera and required surgical instruments are inserted to collect tissue samples.

Mediastinoscopy, where breast bone tiny incision is made and tube is inserted and then moved down in chest. Peritoneoscopy, physician can see inside abdomen. Bronchoscopy, is used to diagnose pleural mesothelioma though inserting a tube in bronchi.

What You Need to Know About Mesothelioma Attorney

by Edward

Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer where the malicious cells affect chest, abdomen and heart cavities and is caused by continued exposure to asbestos for a considerable period of time. Due to the health hazards involved, many countries have banned the use of this substance. However, they are still in use in many parts of the world as a material for insulation. As per a national act enacted in 1979, persons affected by mesothelioma are entitled to compensation from their employers. Here is where the requirement of mesothelioma attorney comes up.

The outcome of every case, be it a mesothelioma or any other case, depends on the expertise of the representing lawyer or attorney. The defendants may try every technical loophole to wriggle out and it is up to the mesothelioma attorney to plug the loopholes and present the case in such a way that the victim gets maximum compensation.

Examination of many past cases throws up some interesting outcomes. While some victims got good compensation in a reasonable time frame while some others could get very measly amounts, that too after lugging for very long periods. Such outcomes add insult to injury to the already devastated persons and their family members. The law treats each case on its merit, making it doubly important for you to choose the right mesothelioma attorney to fight your case.
Years of specialized experience in the field can come as a boon for a mesothelioma attorney while fighting a case. Novices may find it difficult to stand the ground. A mesothelioma attorney's job become doubly difficult because usually the cancer is detected long years after the victims quit their disease enticing jobs. Detection occurs even later. Proving that the person was affected while working under the particular employer entails very long deliberations and meticulous detailing. The attorney has to make his claim based on the available medical and employment history of his client.

A good rapport should develop between the client and the attorney. Here the role of the mesothelioma attorney is more than that of the client. He has to sensibly approach the client who is not in the best of physical health, and suffering from a resultant mental anguish. An attorney in this field need to be patient and should discuss the procedures involved, time lines, his fees, and every other connected matter which may be of concern before taking up a case.

The career of a mesothelioma attorney can take a beating if he fails in these counts. Internet discussion forums are giving opportunities to all and sundry to vent their anguish. If an attorney fails or does not treat his or client properly, the anguished party can plug into these forums and malign the errant. It has become a practice these days that people check such concerned discussion forums to find the persons and services that may serve them well. A negative posting on such a mesothelioma blog can completely destroy the confidence of people on a particular attorney.

Are You Looking For a Mesothelioma Attorney

by Tommi Corine

At the very outset you need to understand what an attorney is. He or she is a qualified and licensed person, legally appointed by you, to act as your agent in business transactions or legal proceedings. Attorneys dealing specifically in cases of mesothelioma needs to be highly dedicated, result oriented and sincere to their clients since they are handling shattered families and individuals.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer where the harmful cells are found to attack the chest, abdomen and heart cavities. Almost all mesothelioma patients have been infected due to long term exposure to asbestos. Many countries have banned the usage of this material due to its toxic nature. In most cases, mesothelioma develops long after the person leaves the job, and is detected even later. Once diagnosed to be suffering from mesothelioma, a patient can approach legal authorities to obtain compensation.

Mesothelioma attorney is a person specialized in the field. Since it can be an uphill battle for the patient to get his grievance redressed, chartering an experienced and qualified attorney is of paramount importance. The qualification and experience of an attorney plays a very important role in the outcome of a case. Due to this, you need to exercise utmost caution and selectiveness while looking for a mesothelioma attorney to fight your case.

Searching in the Internet to find out a mesothelioma attorney may not give you a desirable result. You may end up finding hundreds of them, but their credentials and trustworthiness may not be known to you. A better option is to get into a mesothelioma blog and post your query. This would provide you a wider perspective on the services offered by different attorneys in the field and their success levels. Negative information may come out about mesothelioma attorneys who messed up their clients' cases in the past. Give a wide berth to such attorneys.

Always make sure at the outset itself that the mesothelioma attorney you are about to pick specializes in mesothelioma cases. The number of cases he or she represented, and success accrued should be thoroughly evaluated. Never hesitate to ask questions. The attorney also should have an infrastructure to carry out the legal processes speedily. The level of speed and deftness in handling can make or mar a case.

A mesothelioma attorney should have the patience to sit with his or her client and explain to them the step by step legal procedures, the requirements from the part of the client and the costs involved. The attorney should reveal all costs involved beforehand, otherwise you may end up paying much more in terms of hidden charges. If the mesothelioma attorney is unwilling to disclose any of these facts, it is better to shunt him out and approach another one to fight your case. After all, there is no dearth of willing and helpful attorneys in this field who are qualified and experienced enough to secure you a legal victory.

Mesothelioma Cancer May Have Potential Early Warning Signs

Copyright (c) 2008 Katie Kelley

A study from the Department of Molecular Pathology at the Polytechnic University of Marche in Acona, Italy recently found that biomarkers within the body may offer early warning signs for mesothelioma victims.

The study focused on biomarkers of mesothelioma cancer and found that biomarkers often form before mesothelioma cancer symptoms appear, which may offer early warnings and potentially a successful treatment for mesothelioma cancer patients, according to the study which was published in a June issue of Mutation Research.

Studying Biomarkers to Help Mesothelioma Treatment

Biomarkers are a type of "biochemically expressed substance" similar to a protein, according to a news report on the study. An effort is being collaborated on by the International Cancer Biomarker Consortium (ICBC) to better address biomarkers as indicators of cancer types such as mesothelioma.

This effort is on the level of the Human Genome Project, according to officials from the ICBC, and biomarkers are being studied worldwide. The Polytechnic study followed 119 individuals who had been previously exposed to asbestos; of these individuals, all exhibited increased numbers of biomarkers compared to individuals who were not exposed to asbestos.

What is Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer that can develop after an individual is exposed to asbestos fibers or asbestos dust. After an individual is exposed to asbestos fibers, they may begin to develop cancerous cells on the interior lining of the lung. The cancer is often described as one of the only preventable forms of cancer especially since individuals are still being exposed to asbestos in America through improper cleanup and disposal methods. Currently, asbestos is found in insulation in homes, apartment buildings, hospitals, offices and schools.

Unfortunately, individuals continue to be exposed to asbestos fibers because of its existence in many products implemented throughout the country, and because it is too costly to remove all asbestos by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), many remain at risk. Additionally, because mesothelioma cancer usually remains dormant for years, it becomes increasingly difficult to diagnose and to successfully treat.

Finding Help for Asbestos Related Conditions Like Mesothelioma

It is important that individuals who may have been exposed to asbestos to contact a medical professional immediately to assess and potentially diagnose their condition. The sooner mesothelioma cancer can be diagnosed the more successful an outcome will be.

Mesothelioma Cancer-What You Need to Know?

by Tommi Corine

Gone are the days when the term 'mesothelioma' was not familiar with the masses. These days just a mention of the word brings about uncomfortable picture of factories and mines scattered with asbestos and the hapless victims working over there in dangerous conditions. More insight is thrown into the plight of mesothelioma patients owing to the concern of medical professionals, researchers and other organizations. Still there is a long way to go regarding the early diagnosis and treatment of the fatal condition.

Mesothelioma is commonly referred to as Asbestos Cancer. This is an aggressive cancer which is caused mainly due to the inhalation of dangerous asbestos fibers. The disease affects the mesothelium, a protective two layered membrane which covers the internal organs like lungs, heart and abdominal organs. Between these layers, the cells produce fluid which helps in the easy movement of the internal organs. Mesothelium can affect any of these cells. Most of the victims are usually older individuals since the disease takes almost 25 to 50 years to develop.

Even washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos can prove fatal.
The symptoms of the disease include shortness of breath, chest wall pain, weight loss etc. Chest X-ray and CT scan can be used as diagnostic tools and the disease can be confirmed with a biopsy and microscopic examination. In spite of treatment with chemotherapy, radiation therapy or sometimes surgery, complete cure of the disease is not possible. Researchers are trying their utmost for the early detection of mesothelioma. Other treatment options are gene therapy, immunotherapy, photodynamic therapy etc. Since it is very difficult to diagnose the disease in the early stages, the symptoms are quite serious. Later diagnosis means the cancer must have spread making treatment unsuccessful.

Statistics prove that the disease mostly affected men between the ages of 50 and 70 who were employed in asbestos companies before awareness was created in the 1970s. Second hand exposure to asbestos has resulted in more diagnoses of the cases among women, whose family members worked with asbestos. The residents of the localities where asbestos mines and companies are located are also prone to the disease. Shipyard workers, electricians, plumbers, construction industry workers, pipe fitters etc are also in the danger zone.

The reason for this illness is usually lack of protection given to those work with asbestos. If the employers properly take care of the health of the workers the disease can be prevented to a large extent. Even though there is no complete cure for the disease, the helpless victims can avail many options for support. It is the duty of the family and friends to stand with the victim during this terrible time. Legal help can also be sought very easily these days. But it is important to contact a qualified mesothelioma lawyer as soon as possible.
