Causes of Mesothelioma
By Tim Nally
Mesothelioma is a cancer that results from a genetic mutation within the cells of the body. The mutation causes healthy cells to change into malignant cells (cells that grow uncontrollably). These out-of-control cells multiply rapidly, forming tumors that interfere with the body's functions; the tumors in turn spread more malignant cells through the entire body. In time, mesothelioma causes death. Mesothelioma is a cancer that results from a genetic mutation within the cells of the body. Mesothelioma appears in a variety of forms, and no universal cause of mesothelioma has been discovered. Researchers have discovered that health, lifestyle, and the environment play a significant role in the development of disease; however, the primary cause of mesothelioma in most people is exposure to asbestos.
Asbestos is a fibrous mineral known for its durability, ease of extraction and processing, and its high resistance to heat, flame, and electric currents. It comes in many forms, including woven material, and is found in many products - especially in the manufacturing, resource extraction and processing, and home construction industries.
The toxic effects of asbestos have long been known, and most industrialized countries have placed limits on its use. Prior to the enactment of these limits, however, many people were exposed to occupational asbestos, despite the knowledge by manufacturers and employers of its dangerous nature.
If you are suffering from mesothelioma as a result of negligence on the part of these manufacturers or employers, consider retaining the services of one of our mesothelioma attorneys. They can help you get the compensation and care that are appropriate in your particular case.

Asbestos Safety in the Prevention of Mesothelioma
By J. H. Henry
WHAT IS MESOTHELIOMA?
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer of the lungs which may be caused by exposure to asbestos. The major risk factor for mesothelioma is working with asbestos. About 70 percent to 80 percent of all mesothelioma cases report a history of asbestos exposure at work. Some individuals without any known exposure to asbestos have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. There is a great number of workers who have been exposed to asbestos, have contracted mesothelioma, and have sued their employers. Currently lawyers advertising mesothelioma litigation are all over the place. Asbestos use has been outlawed in many countries, and strict safety precautions are enacted to prevent exposure to asbestos and the resulting mesothelioma. In other parts of the world asbestos safety is much less regulated. I remember being in Taiwan about ten years ago and asbestos roofing was commonplace. Mesothelioma is the one cancer that can be directly associated with asbestos.
As bad as asbestos has been made out to be it is a valuable mineral with a rich history. In manufacturing, the use of asbestos was originally believed to be a miracle mineral it is cheap to produce, has a high resistance to heat, chemical and electrical damage, and tensile strength. Over time it became obvious that workers in asbestos factories and mines who inhale asbestos fibers regularly, over a long period of time are at high risk for contracting the disease.
Asbestos is in great demand in many countries as a cheap, easy to use and durable construction material, and there is therefore a wide market for it. Many people are still unaware of the health risk involved with asbestos and do not know what mesothelioma is. As older buildings are demolished, the remaining asbestos is snatched up and sold.
MESOTHELIOMA SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath, chest wall pain, and weight loss, and diagnosis can be checked using a CT scan or chest X-ray, and can be confirmed with a biopsy. Asbestosis is another disease caused by exposure to asbestos. While not cancerous, it is caused by scarring of the lung tissue which causes the lungs to lose their ability to transfer oxygen to the blood. Asbestosis is difficult to diagnose unless x-rays are taken periodically and compared to detect changes is the condition of the lungs. Mesothelioma is often difficult to pinpoint the cause or origin of the disease because it has a latency period of about 40 years.
SAFETY
Lawsuits against asbestos manufacturers have been appearing since 1929. Since then, the liability from such court cases has reached billions of dollars for not meeting the general duty clause even after the links between prolonged asbestos exposure and Mesothelioma have been confirmed. Certain industries have higher incidence rates of asbestosis and mesothelioma. Among the highest is the shipbuilding industry. Workers would often spend over 8 hours a day in an enclosed ship inhaling asbestos fibers without any respiratory protection. Because of the lawsuits and the general recognition that asbestos has inherent dangers, the US EPA has rigorous policies regarding all aspects of asbestos safety. The evidence is that when handled safely, the use of it can be properly managed. It is often more safe to leave asbestos in place but to ensure that people are notified of its presence and safely work with it.
SYNERGISM AND SMOKING CIGARETTES
There is a synergistic effect between smoking cigarettes and exposure to asbestos. This means that someone who smokes and has been exposed to asbestos is at a greater risk of developing lung cancer than the risks of someone who only smokes or the risks of someone who is only exposed to asbestos combined.
J.H. Henry has had over 20 years in the safety industry specializing in radiation, chemical and biological safety and compliance. He is active in civic organizations and involved in promoting safety and compliance in various environments including the world wide web.

The Lung Cancer Conundrum
By Tim Giardina
Yul Brynner born on July 11th 1920 in Vladivostok, Russia, remains one of the most unique, somewhat mysterious but highly recognizable and beloved stars of his time. Actor, Director, Narrator, star of stage and screen. He is best known to me as an actor. He was the King in "The King and I" and won an Oscar for that role. " The Ten Commandments," "The Magnificent Seven" "Solomon and Sheba". Just to name a few. Who could forget the unrelenting robot/gunslinger in "Westworld" that chased me through my mid-seventies nightmares. So many movies, television and stage appearances that to list them all would be to write a separate column. His face, voice and that unmistakable bald head, part of the very mystic which made him so memorable.
For so many of us, the legacy of Yul Brynner is wrapped up in the memory of the anti-smoking commercial that aired after his death from lung cancer in 1985. I just saw it for the first time in years on my computer and it put a lump in my throat. That image of the man who had lost his struggle but found a way to fight on. I respect that and respect him for it.
In 2007, I was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer and faced with the facts that the odds were not good. I have survived for two years and now run a non profit organization for funding lung cancer research and offering support to patients and families.
The "Yul Brynner effect" as I now call it is still as effective today as it was 20 years ago and that might not necessarily be a good thing anymore.
Tell anyone you meet that you have lung cancer and the first question back to you is "did you or do you smoke?"
The willingness of someone to donate to a cause is subject to several factors. First being their financial ability to give, second is the ability to connect to the cause. We have been pounding it into peoples' heads for years that lung cancer is a smokers' issue, therefore if I don't smoke, lung cancer is not my issue. It's that "you did it to yourself," disconnect coupled with the extremely high mortality rate that keeps lung cancer in the closet even though lung cancer will kill more people this year then breast, colon and prostate cancer combined.
Somehow we have to move beyond that powerful Yul Brynner image and replace it with a new face and a voice, one that says, " How and why it happened to you is not as important as what we need to do to cure you and keep future generations safe from cancer's leading killer." One that will assist research facilities all over the country in educating and employing the next generation of scientists and researchers by generating the funds needed.
Maybe the new face of Lung cancer is in your mirror and the voice is the one in your head telling you to do something now before it is a necessity for a loved one.
Ultimately Yul's message was a simple, powerful message from a man who like many of us realized too late how precious life is and that it must be defended at all costs. A warning to do the things necessary today to help prolong your tomorrows. 24 years later still powerful, still meaningful but somehow lost in the chaos of the day.

Three Main Types of Mesothelioma
Three Main Types of Mesothelioma
By Joseph Devine
Exposure to asbestos can lead to a number of long-lasting and even fatal disorders such as pleural plaques, asbestos warts, and lung cancer. Additionally, a specific type of cancer, called mesothelioma is almost always caused by asbestos. This deadly cancer comes in three different forms that attacks the membranes of the body.
Asbestos can be a wonderfully helpful mineral as long as it does not flake off into microscopic airborne fibers, which can then become lodged in your body. The reason why this mineral became so popular is because it is a silicate mineral. Silicates are highly resistant to a number of different things, including heat, chemicals, flame, electricity, and degradation. Additionally, asbestos itself is characterized by high tensile strength and flexibility.
Because of this, asbestos was a prominent component of many different materials for most of the 20th century. It could be found in ceiling tiles, brake pads, stage curtains, vinyl flooring, and more. However, doctors in a South African town near asbestos mines recognized a lung disease that was not responding to tuberculosis medication. After several years of research, they determined that they had found a new type of cancer caused by asbestos exposure, called mesothelioma. They published their findings in the late 1950s, and now we have discovered even more about this disease.
Mesothelioma is a particular form of cancer that attacks the inner linings of the body. Serous membranes line things like organs and are important because they secrete a special fluid that keeps friction from wearing away at your insides. There are three prominent serous membranes in the body, with other smaller ones scattered throughout. Thus, mesothelioma can originate in any of these.
First, pleural mesothelioma is the primary form of the disease. It attacks the lining of the lungs, causing an accumulation of fluid between the lungs and the lung cavity. This leads to symptoms like coughing, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, and weight loss.
Next, the type of mesothelioma that harms the stomach and abdomen is called peritoneal mesothelioma. Doctors believe that ingested asbestos fibers contribute to this disease, which causes tumors to build up along the walls of the abdomen. This can cause things like pain, nausea, vomiting, and bowel obstruction. Additionally, peritoneal mesothelioma can spread into the testicles, which are surrounded by an extension of the peritoneal membrane.
Lastly, pericardial mesothelioma affects the lining that surrounds the heart. This is the rarest form of this cancer, and it also causes tumors that lead to a buildup of fluid around the heart. This can disrupt the heart's function, which can lead to chest pain and palpitations.
Whatever form of this cancer someone has, it can be extremely painful and also fatal. If you or someone you love is suffering from this terrible disease, you should talk to a lawyer about your options. Lung Cancer Signs
Lung Cancer Signs
By Angela Linton
Lung Cancer occurs when abnormal cells begin to grow inside the lungs and this can be due to tobacco smoke. The smoke can be from first-hand or secondhand experience. Therefore, if you are not a smoker, knowing that exposure to the fumes can cause you to become sick, you may take steps to avoid it.
In the early stages of this disease, there may not be any signs to suggest that this is what is wrong. Nevertheless, as it progresses, several signs will be evident and some of them are:
Cough
If you have decided to use over the counter medication for a cough and after using it, the cough is still there, it is best to visit a doctor. If you are a smoker, please do not think that it is simply a case of the smoke going down the wrong way.
Chest Pains
If you are experiencing chest pains that can and cannot be explained by you and especially when it is not going away, please do not ignore it, have a doctor check your lungs.
Swollen Neck and Face
An unexplained swollen face and neck can be because of lung cancer.
Pneumonia and Bronchitis
A reoccurring case of Pneumonia and Bronchitis is also an indication that you may have this disease.
It is possible for the disease to move from the lungs, to other parts of the body, especially when it is not treated. Therefore, if you are faced with some or all of these signs, visiting a doctor as soon as possible is advisable because the sooner it is caught, the better the outcome may be.

Struggling With Mesothelioma Information
Struggling With Mesothelioma Information
By Katie Kelley
Experiencing the difficulties of living with Mesothelioma or another asbestos-related illness can often be an overwhelming burden on an individual. Not only is their daily routine forever changed, but the lack of information about their condition serves to exacerbate the situation by leaving them with a feeling of helplessness. There are several hurdles as well in finding appropriate information regarding these conditions; either individuals are assailed with an insurmountable number of websites, book, articles, and other resources, or they find difficulty finding applicable, scholarly, and approachable information they can easily use and implement.
While several Internet security groups, business associations, and anti-scam groups combine forces to deal with the ever growing threat of predatory websites, there still remain hundreds if not thousands of websites which seek to exploit those in need. This rings true even more so for those with a serious health problem like Mesothelioma cancer. These predatory medical sites often make claims of enlisting medical professionals, though these are often dubious claims at the least. As these claims remain dubious, this presents not only a questionable statement, but also brings about questions on the validity of the site. Other sites will offer complete home treatment for several serious conditions, yet these sites present the same concerns as others; there seems to be no legitimate recourse for the verification of their advice. These sites should be viewed with a degree of skepticism and only implemented under the guidance of a health care professional.
Though there are a host of sites that seek to deceive and exploit those in need, there are several resources an individual can use to properly gather information about Mesothelioma and conditions arising from asbestos exposure.
The first and most official resource individuals should look into is the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website. This site is updated often with the latest news and trending health care topics, including breaking news and recalls that could affect an individuals health. Specifically for Mesothelioma patients, the site offers a searching feature that allows individuals access to several pages of Mesothelioma statistics, research data, and continued examinations of the cancer. The CDC site also offers healthy lifestyle tips, articles on the latest advances and studies in the health care field, and other government mandated health related information.
Another resource which could prove helpful is the online, user-edited encyclopedia known as Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a free, web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia where users can browse an expansive base of knowledge added and edited by scholars, doctors, and a community of learning. This broadly supported encyclopedia not only provides users with information regarding, for instance, mesothelioma cancer, but it also provides additional links to almost every facet of the topic. This functionality provides the user with a broad support of information on the underlying causes and concerns surrounding the condition which can prove incredibly helpful when making serious decisions considering treatment.

Mesothelioma - Reading Relevant Books Helps Reduce the Pain
Mesothelioma - Reading Relevant Books Helps Reduce the Pain
By Jason W. Myers
Books are rich sources of gaining knowledge about mesothelioma. There is great deal of books written by many advanced researchers as well as well-qualified physicians on the subjects and they enlighten us with many complicated aspects of the disease. Some detail out the treatments, symptoms as well as supportive sources while others advice on how to find good doctors while some others advice on how to keep patients' hope alive. The books written on the legal side of the mesothelioma cases is yet another great resource and helps mesothelioma patients to file cases against the relevant parties demanding compensation for the terminal damages done.
The books that give information about asbestos related mesothelioma cancer can provide patients great relief as knowing the causes of the disease and the symptoms of the current position they are in, is a great help to go through the pain.
If a mesothelioma patient wants to pursue a lawsuit against relevant parties, books written on the legal aspects of mesothelioma cases are a great help. When a patient is on the threshold of filing a case, a competent attorney can give out relevant books or direct the patient to reliable sources to get books enlightening him or her with the actual facts.
'Help me Live: 20 things people with cancer want to know' written by Lori Hope is one such book that help to get ample information on the subject. The author is a survivor from a cancer and provides people with rare information about this deadly cancer and the details about inadequate researches to find an effective treatment for the disease.
Another book named 'Mesothelioma' has been edited by Bruce W. S. Robison and A Philippe Chahinian. It has been written based on the advices of renowned mesothelioma doctors who have great experience in treating mesothelioma patients. The books also provide patients with information about traditional medications as well.
It is one of the deadliest diseases today, and because the exposure to asbestos was high before and even after the '80s there are many mesothelioma settlement cases these days. To find more information about mesothelioma class action visit our website by clicking on one of these links.

Palliative Care
By Joseph Devine
When you have been diagnosed with a major illness, you will likely find yourself undergoing more than one kind of treatment. First, of course, there are the drugs and procedures that will target the illness itself, with the goal of either curing or at least reducing it. Many patients with cancer or other severe illnesses also need another form of treatment called palliative care.
This kind of medicine is not centered on the goal of curing illness. Instead, its entire purpose is to reduce symptoms called by health conditions, as well as the side effects of medications. Patients in hospice care only receive palliative treatment - they are no longer trying to cure their conditions - but they are not its only recipients. Many patients receive it in addition to their primary medicine.
Targeted Symptoms
Lung cancer patients often suffer from many painful symptoms, in addition to the rough side effects of chemotherapy or radiation. Fortunately, doctors have many different techniques for reducing these painful issues. Some of the symptoms they target, and their common solutions, include:
Pain: Pain is one of the most persistent problems for cancer patients. It can be caused directly by the disease, or by attempts to cure it. There are a variety of pharmaceutical products that can effectively treat pain, although many of them have mild side effects of their own. Some patients supplement painkilling drugs - or even replace them - with alternate methods. These can include meditation, herbal remedies, or acupuncture.
Dyspnea: This is a persistent shortness of breath or other breathing difficulty. Many mesothelioma patients have recurring problems with it. Its treatment will depend on its exact cause - for example, fluid buildup or damage to the lungs. Some patients need supplemental oxygen, while others can address the problem with breathing and relaxation exercises.
Dry mouth: People who are undergoing chemo or radiotherapy often suffer from a persistent lack of saliva called dry mouth. This can be a very uncomfortable condition that makes it difficult to eat and speak. There are many over-the-counter products that may ease this symptom, including chewing gum and mouthwash. Many patients also carry water bottles with them as often as possible.
Nausea: Severe stomach upset and vomiting can become very worrisome, especially if they lead to malnutrition or dehydration. Unfortunately, many people with serious diseases suffer from this problem. There are prescription drugs called anti-emetics that may help, as well as soothing drinks and herbs.
If you or a loved one is suffering, do not be afraid to ask your doctor for extra help. Effective treatments are available, but only if you report the problem.

The Scope of Possible Mesothelioma Treatments
By Thomas Ajava
Mesothelioma is a rare, but deadly form of cancer. In this article, we take a look at the three most common forms of treatment a patient can expect to undergo.
Mesothelioma is one of the odder forms of cancer you will find. It is most often associated with exposure to asbestos dust. The odd thing is once exposure occurs, it can take between 30 and 50 years for the Mesothelioma tumors to present. This long period combined with the difficulty in diagnosis results in most cases being very advanced by the time the disease is discovered. Still, there are standard treatment approaches that are followed.
Surgery
The most common approach is surgical intervention. A surgeon will seek to remove the effected mesothelium and other organic material. Common surgeries include the removal of part or all of a lung, part of the diaphragm and parts of the abdomen. The mesothelium is the lining that is attacked by cancer in Mesothelioma and it runs throughout the chest and abdomen. Wherever it goes, the cancer can spread and call for surgery.
Radiotherapy
Radiotherapy has long been a treatment option for many different types of cancer. Known by its lay name "radiation", the goal is to use energy waves to kill cancer cells and reduce the size of cancerous tumors. There are two types of radiotherapy. The first is the external approach where rays are shot into the body in the impacted area. The second is an internal approach where radioactive material is actually inserted into the cancerous area to kill the cells in question.
Chemo
Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are often mixed together, but are distinct. Chemotherapy is the introduction of anti-cancer drugs into the body to attack the cancerous cells or inhibit their spreading. Chemo can be done by taking pills, but usually involves intravenous liquid injections into veins.
Mesothelioma is a difficult cancer to beat, but it can be done. The process usually uses a combination of the above treatment options.

What is Malignant Mesothelioma?
By Yachi Verma
There are nerve cells running through the entire length of the body and this includes the organs. Have you ever thought why you are not experiencing any forms of pain, when you are stretching? The internal organs, primarily the lungs are rubbing against the chest cavity, and yet you are never experiencing any form of pain. The same can be applied when you are breathing heavily. We are not experiencing pain because almost all the major organs and cavities within the body are lined by mesothelium. This sheath layer protects the organs from sudden shocks and impacts.
Cancer of the mesothelium will lead to mesothelioma. When a foreign substance is present in the mesothelium cells, it will try to get rid of that substance. The foreign substance can be anything literally, but in the case of mesothelioma, it is usually the mineral asbestos. Mesothelioma or malignant mesothelioma will be the result. Since the mesothelium can be found in all parts of the body, the mesothelioma can originate anywhere in the body. Pleural mesothelioma is known to be the most ordinary type of malignant mesothelioma. The pleura is a membrane covering the lungs and the chest cavity.
The condition is also widely known as asbestos cancer mesothelioma. As I had mentioned in the previous passage, the primary cause of mesothelioma is inhalation of fine microscopic asbestos powder. One of the other forms of malignant mesothelioma is the peritoneal mesothelioma. This cancer originates in the abdomen and the abdomen cavity. This is the second most form of mesothelioma apart from the former pleural mesothelioma. The latency period for the various forms of asbestos cancer mesothelioma is large. It is usually during the latter stages that the patient is diagnosed with the disease. By then, the chances of survival might be slim.
The pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma can lead to pericardial mesothelioma. This is caused during the advanced stages of the condition. The infection might spread from the pleura or the abdomen and might spread to the pericardium that covers the heart. The symptoms of malignant mesothelioma include breathing problems and pain related to breathing. The patient might not be able to undertake in the daily chores and might experience fatigue at all times. Cough that is dry in nature is a common symptom associated with asbestos cancer mesothelioma. If the doctor can successfully diagnose the condition during the earlier stages itself, then it can be treated effectively using trimodal procedures.
Surgery is the main form of treatment for all forms of asbestos cancer mesothelioma. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the other forms of treatment procedures recommended by doctors. Suitable protection must be provided to the employees who are handling asbestos and those who work in environments filled with asbestos powder. Since the condition is difficult to be diagnosed, most of the patients are known to succumb to the condition. Early detection is also impossible because the patient might never exhibit any form of symptoms during the initial stages. Prevention is the best cure, as they say.

Mesothelioma Treatment Exposed
By Yachi Verma
Mesothelioma is a deadly condition that is marked by the growth of cancerous cells on the mesothelium. Treatment procedures are in existence, but many factors decide the affectivity of the treatment options. In this short article, I will be explaining some of these treatment options. Mesothelioma is known to occur in stages. If the condition is diagnosed at an earlier stage, then there is room for survival. Moreover, the chances are slight. Unlike the other types of cancers that are in existence on this day, the condition is difficult to be diagnosed. Let us ponder over some of the available treatment options.
The most important type of cure is surgery. This is usually done during the initial stages and is the most recommended form of mesothelioma treatment. The procedure involves removing the cancerous cells from the regions affected using suitable surgical measures. The process might get complicated in certain situations. The surgery might be the direct cause of malignant forms of mesothelioma as seen on some of the patients. For example, benign mesothelioma can transform to pleural mesothelioma when certain surgeries go complicated. Please make a note of the point that surgery is helpful only on the onset of the cancer cell growth.
The second form of mesothelioma treatment is chemotherapy. The treatment procedure is simple - chemicals are injected to the body of the patient. These chemicals are designed in such a manner that they are known to act on specific cancerous cells only. The doctor might recommend chemotherapy when surgical procedures do not work out to be feasible for the patient. Chemotherapy might be beneficial to some of the patients, but it does come with lots of disadvantages. The body should properly respond to the chemotherapy. If it does not, the treatment is futile. Doctors who are taking care of the patient always keep a tab on the progress achieved by them.
When chemotherapy is not working as intended, doctors shift to another form of mesothelioma treatment. It is known as the radiation therapy. Specialized rays are used in this procedure to burn away the cancer causing cells. This is an expensive procedure and is usually recommended only during the most advanced stages of the disease. Doctors usually subject the patient to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. It is effective for some of the patients, but for others the situation might remain the same. The above-mentioned treatment options are used in conjunction according to the extent of growth of the cancer cells.
As I had mentioned earlier, once the condition is diagnosed, the treatment options can be started. These days, doctors make use of SMRP tests to diagnose the condition. The mesothelium cells that are attacked by the cancerous agents release a specific compound as a byproduct. If the presence of this compound is revealed in the blood tests, then doctors may urge for more advanced tests to assimilate the situation. Some of the researchers have questioned the integrity of these types of tests. It is better to discuss with the doctor about the mesothelioma prognosis and reach to a suitable decision.

Mesothelioma - Dealing With Shortness of Breath
By Thomas Ajava
Mesothelioma is a fairly rare cancer that is associated with exposure to asbestos. The cancer manifests with many different symptoms depending on the stage it is in and the location of the body. In many cases, shortness of breath is one problem, but there are a number of ways to deal with it.
Mesothelioma is somewhat of a catch phrase for a certain type of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. It refers to a cancer of the Mesothelioma lining in the upper body. The problem is this lining is found everywhere from the sac surrounding the heart down to the organs in the lower abdomen. As a result, a diagnosis of Mesothelioma around the lower, far right lung is much different then the same diagnosis for the heart.
The vast number of Mesothelioma cases deal with cancer around the lung area. As a result, the lungs are often impacted in a couple of ways. The practical function many be disturbed, but the bigger problem is usually the embedding of small asbestos fibers in the alveoli where the air in the lungs is transferred into the blood. This can lead to shortness of breath for many patients.
Is there anything that can be done for shortness of breath in these situations? Yes. The first is to tell your doctor! He or she may prescribe medication or oxygen assisted breathing sessions to give you relief. You can take some practical steps as well. Meditation and yoga are excellent ideas as they help a person relax, which will reduce the taxation on your lungs. You should also consider sleeping on multiple pillows in an effort to get your head above the plain of your body. This will ease your breathing as well.
There is no cure per se to Mesothelioma, but early discovery can make the difference between living and dying. While the disease is deadly, that doesn't mean you have to suffer from some of the symptoms. Shortness of breath is one that can be dealt with if you make an effort.

Mesothelioma Stages - The Butchart System
Mesothelioma Stages - The Butchart System
By Thomas Ajava
Mesothelioma is a cancer that is most often associated with exposure to asbestos. A diagnosis of Mesothelioma necessarily engenders a question of the possible treatments and outcome for the patient. The Butchart system is one way to gauge the stages of Mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is like many cancers in that the variety of treatment options available changes with the progress of the disease. Catch it early and there are plenty of options to choose from. Catch it in the later stages and the prospects are not so positive. To understand the situation you or a friend who has been diagnosed with Mesothelioma are in, you need to understand the stages of the disease.
The Butchart System is the oldest staging system used for Mesothelioma. Oddly, there are others as well, but we will focus on the Butchart version in this article. The system is comprised of four stages and focuses on the primary tumor as a starting point. Let's take a closer look.
Stage One
In stage one, the Mesothelioma has manifested in the pleura or lining of the chest. It is usually present in one side or the other. It may have also manifested in the diaphragm area as well.
Stage Two
The Mesothelioma has advanced significantly at this stage. It is now in the lining of both sides of the chest cavity. It may also be in the esophagus and lining of the heart. Lymph nodes in the chest are almost certainly impacted and may be creating a method of movement for the cancer.
Stage Three
The cancer continues to spread. It is now clearly into the esophagus and heart lining. It is also spreading throughout the Mesothelium of the abdomen. Lymph nodes beyond the immediate chest area are also showing cancer cells.
Stage Four
The Mesothelium has metastasized fully. It is moving through the blood stream to other parts of the body. Multiple internal organs are now showing cancer cells. The situation is very dire.
So, what treatment options apply to each of these stages? There really isn't a pat answer. The problem is the treatment usually is very aggressive. It can involve any combination of surgery, radiation and chemo therapy. The exact mix will depend on your overall health and the opinion of your physicians.

Getting a Grasp on Lung Cancer
By Thomas Ajava
Being diagnosed with cancer, any cancer, is the last thing anyone wants. Lung cancer is a fairly common form of cancer and not just for smokers. In this article, we take a look at the basics of this disease
Lung cancer is the result of the mutation of DNA. DNA is the code in our cells that determines our physical characteristics. When our cells split, they take an exact copy of our DNA each time. Sometimes, however, this split does not go smoothly and the DNA is compromised. This is known as a mutation. Medical research has discovered it takes multiple mutations to create lung cancer cells.
Lung cancer comes with many variations, but is always classified as primary or secondary cancer. What does this mean? Well, the primary designation is fairly easy to understand. It simply means that the cancerous cells were created in the lungs and have metastasized there. The secondary version is often called "unlucky" cancer because the problem did not start in the lungs, but has worked its way to the lungs from some other part of the body where cancer exists. Indeed, one of the biggest issues with cancer sometimes is simply trying to find the original location.
Lung cancer is the third most common form of cancer, but the biggest killer. It accounts for approximately 15 percent of all cancer diagnosis each year, but kills the highest percentage of people [29 percent] of all the cancers. If there is any good news about this cancer, it is the fact it takes a long time to manifest. This means the average age of a person being diagnosed is just under 70.
There are a variety of causes when it comes to lung cancer. Smoking is obviously the number one factor and hundreds of thousands of people die each year from smoking related problems. That being said, exposure to substances such as radon, asbestos and second hand smoke can also be problematic. Sadly, some cases are simply destined to occur as a matter of genetics.
As with most forms of cancer, the key with lung cancer is to get an early diagnosis. It will be a scary diagnosis, but all is not lost given the advancements of medicine.

Chemotherapy - Treatment For Lung Cancer
By Anand Prabhakar
The process of destroying the cancer cells by introducing the anti cancer drugs into the body is called Chemotherapy. This method can be performed for many types of cancers like lung, ovarian, liver, abdominal, neck and brain cancers as well. Lung cancer arises as a result of the improper growth of cells in the lungs. Lungs are the important organ in our body which purifies the air we breathe. So cancer produced in lungs could be producing breathing problems for us.
The drugs purposely employed for lung cancer is; Carboplatin and Taxol, germicitabine with cisplatin, vinorelbine and cisplatin. These drugs are normally injected into the body rather than taking orally. The treatment may be performed for few days and the patient will be asked to be in rest for few weeks. The treatment performed would be based on the stage of the disease.
Performing chemotherapy brings up so many side effects. The setback of chemotherapy is the side effects. It produces a reduction in the production of the white blood corpuscles (WBC). It is the WBC which is responsible for the protection of our body against infection. Its reduction will indicate that our body is open to all sorts the infections.
As the drugs not only destroy the cancer cells but also some healthy cells, the platelets produced in the body may reduce. These platelets are responsible for the clotting of blood in our body. It may result in unstopped bleeding.
Due to destruction of healthier cells, there may be tiredness, hair loss, sore mouth, vomiting, and anemia and so on. But most of the side effects will be present at the time of treatment, and they may disappear once the treatment gets over.

A Tragic History - Mesothelioma and Asbestos Cancer
By Joe Belluck
Many asbestos cancer experts, attorneys, and mesothelioma sufferers view asbestos as a material developed and used only in the 19th century. But in fact, asbestos was first discovered and named by the ancient Greeks. In this article, we will examine the facts of asbestos use throughout the ages. We will see what was known about the dangers of asbestos cancer, and when mesothelioma and asbestosis began to be recognized as the tragic illnesses they are known to be today.
Asbestos And Mesothelioma: From The Ancient World To The 21st Century
In ancient Rome, asbestos fibers were uses to make clothing flame retardant. In Greece, the fibers were used to make other textiles. In Persia, garments were prized for their ability to be cleaned over a fire, instead of with water. In China, Marco Polo describes similar items that were "washed" by being dropped into flames. These clothes could only have been made from asbestos. After the fall of the Roman Empire and the fade of the great empires of the east, the use of asbestos seemed to stop.
As of 1860, asbestos had appeared again across the United States and Canada, mostly used as insulation within buildings. In 1879, the first commercial asbestos mine appeared in Canada, just outside of Quebec. By the turn of the century, asbestos use was much more common: flame-resistant coatings, concrete, flooring, roofing, acid resistant materials, and lawn furniture all had asbestos components.
With the rise of asbestos use came the first recorded death as a result of mesothelioma asbestos cancer. In 1906, an asbestos miner died of asbestos cancer, but his cause of death was not established until later. However, further instances of mesothelioma -- still diagnosed as an unknown lung disorder -- were observed throughout the early 20th century, particularly in asbestos mining towns.
Libby, Montana is a modern example of a mining town contaminated with asbestos. The EPA has been attempting to clean up Libby for 10 years, but 200 people thus far have died from asbestos exposure, with over 1,000 sickened. The town was contaminated by a nearby vermiculite mine, its residents threatened by waste products and discarded materials from mining operations.
The town of Libby has been stricken by asbestos contamination despite modern day interventions. In the early days, before mesothelioma was recognized or asbestos poisoning considered, towns were even more dramatically impacted. Yet even now, when the dangers of asbestos, as well as its links with mesothelioma, are clear, company negligence still goes unpunished. The company responsible for the mine that contaminated Libby was recently acquitted in a trial centered around the deaths in the town. The mining company will face no penalty, despite the hundreds of asbestos poisoning deaths and thousands of asbestos-related illnesses in Libby.
The First Diagnosis Of Asbestos Cancer, Asbestosis, And Mesothelioma
In 1924, a doctor in England recognized the pattern of illness and made the first diagnosis of asbestos cancer. At the time, it was called asbestosis and the existence of mesothelioma remained unknown. Nonetheless, the initial diagnosis created a wave of laws about asbestos handling -- at least in England. The United Kingdom began regulating ventilation and established asbestosis as an "excusable work related disease" in the 1930s. The United States did not take the same measures until nearly 10 years later.
Around 1930, the medical community was beginning to investigate mesothelioma, at that time a new disease with strange symptoms and little information. They could only observe the symptoms: coughing, shortness of breath, and generalized chest/lung pain. Mesothelioma was not connected to asbestos nor suggested as asbestos cancer until 1940.
What Did Companies Know About The Hazards Of Asbestos Exposure?
The basis of mesothelioma and asbestos cancer legislation is that many asbestos companies knew the material was dangerous, but did not protect workers and customers from these known dangers. Court documents have shown that companies began to learn about asbestos related health hazards as early as 1930, but despite this knowledge, they did nothing to keep workers or consumers safe. Instead, they allowed asbestos use to grow even as diagnoses of mesothelioma and asbestos cancer grew as well.
Although limited through a lawsuit, the Environmental Protection Agency issued a rule in 1989 that allows only trace amounts of asbestos to appear in modern building materials. Even though lingering asbestos contamination remains and threatens citizens, the modern world now recognizes the dangers of asbestos and no longer uses it as a primary material.
The Dangers Of Natural Asbestos
Although asbestos exposure occurs most commonly through contact with asbestos mines or products made from asbestos, there are also a shockingly large number of so-called asbestos "occurrences" throughout the U.S. These sites are not commonly monitored by the EPA, nor has much been done to clean them up or protect surrounding communities.
An asbestos "occurrence" is defined as a place where asbestos has been observed, but not mined or prospected for mining. These veins of asbestos can be shallow enough that asbestos dust rises into the air, making the name "occurrences" misleading - they're more like "hazards." There are 205 such documented occurrences throughout the eastern part of the U.S., and most of these have been discovered through anecdotal evidence rather than active surveys. The government has helped to clean up commercial asbestos use, but they have done little to control the dangers of exposure to the material in its natural state. Even when not manufactured or milled, asbestos and its fibers can cause mesothelioma, asbestos cancer, asbestos poisoning, and all the other horrific conditions that can result from the disease.
Mesothelioma and Asbestos Cancer Today
Although asbestos has been regulated for 20 years, mesothelioma lawsuits are still being filed today because of the long incubation period of the disease. The cancer frequently requires 20-50 years between exposure and the manifestation of symptoms, meaning that many workers who handled asbestos during the height of its use are only just starting to show symptoms. Sadly, the numbers of lawsuits are only expected to increase. Asbestos cancer is tragic, and has been tragic throughout history. But today we can fight back against the companies that failed to protect us, and we can know that the world is safer for our children.

Mesothelioma - What Tests Are Used to Diagnose It?
By Thomas Ajava
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is closely associated with asbestos exposure. It can take up to 40 years from the time of exposure for the cancer to manifest. Given this long period, what tests are used to diagnose it?
A common test used in cancer situations is a blood test. Blood is examined for something known as biomarkers. Certain biomarkers are indicative of certain types of cancer. For instance, CA 15-3 is a biomarker that indicates breast cancer in women. Unfortunately, there is no known biomarker at this point in time for Mesothelioma. In fact, blood tests do not provide any information to a physician regarding whether a patient has this form of cancer.
A chest x-ray is really the first line of attack against Mesothelioma when it comes to diagnostic tests. These x-rays are not particularly sensitive, but they present a global look at the chest area. This means the radiologist and physician can identify tumors, scaring and areas of fluid buildup. All are potentially problematic, particularly tumors which can be benign or can metastasize and spread.
Assuming the doctor sees something of interest or concern, he or she may next order a CAT scan. CAT stands for computerized axial tomography and essentially means a three dimensional view of the area in question. A CAT scan can better define the shape, size and characteristics of a mass. That being said, such a scan cannot tell the doctor if the mass is Mesothelioma or not. They can, however, be very helpful in determining if the problem is in an early or late stage.
MRIs are used in many medical practices as diagnostic tools. The trend in Mesothelioma cases is to forgo MRIs for PET scans. A PET scan is a test that shows the usage of glucose. Cancerous tumors, particularly Mesothelioma, tend to use much more glucose than health material. A PET scan can reveal this and helps get to the heart of the problem, to wit, do you have cancer or not.
It is important to understand that none of these diagnostic tools will absolutely tell you and your doctor if Mesothelioma exists. They will simply narrow down the possibilities. Ultimately, any mass is going to have to be biopsied. This involves the actual removal of some of the cells of the mass so that they can be looked at under a microscope. Only then will you know one way or another.

Pericardial Mesothelioma - Understanding This Rare Cancer
By Derek Hales
Pericardial Mesothelioma, also known as mesothelioma of the pericardium is a disease that affects the lining of the heart. This is found in less than 10 percent of the patients who have mesothelioma.
The following information about pericardial mesothelioma will help you understand the condition:
* A conclusive symptom of periodical mesothelioma is the rapid growth of the cancerous tumors that cause expansion of the tissue and accumulation of fluid. Fluids then obstruct the function of the heart causing chest pain and irregular heartbeat. Mostly, complaints of chest pain and other heart related symptoms are conclusive of the condition. Other symptoms for pericardial mesothelioma includes murmurs, cough, difficulty in breathing even when at rest, difficulty in breathing while lying down, fatigue and fever or night sweats.
* Because of the non-specificity of the symptoms, it is difficult to diagnose this type of cancer. But initially, it is through physical examination that can largely point out the condition.
* Diagnosis can be totally confirmed when doctors conduct variety of imaging tests to be able to determine the exact location of the cancer and Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI is found to be the most effective instrument on evaluating the disease and in finding out the extent of its development.
* The final stage in diagnosing pericardial mesothelioma is through biopsy where the point of origin of the cancer is verified. The test involves the removal of tissue or fluid from the pericardium for testing and analysis to confirm the presence of mesothelioma.
* The possible treatment for this type of mesothelioma includes palliative treatment which is often the only option when pericardial mesothelioma gets worse. Palliative treatments aim to improve the patient's quality of life by reducing the severity of symptoms caused by the accumulation of the fluid in the pericardium.
* A palliative treatment using fine needle aspiration technique maybe done to drain accumulated fluid surrounding the heart.
* Radiotherapy can also be used to shrink the tumor and alleviate the symptoms due to the compression of the heart by the accumulating fluid. Although this procedure is very risky because of the proximity of the heart and lungs.
Pericardial mesothelioma accounts for about half of all pericardial tumors and is extremely rare but then again, prevention or early detection is essential in order to succeed.
The least common and most rare of all asbestos related cancers, pericardial mesothelioma makes up less than 10% of all the asbestos-related cancers. These serious cancers are most often deadly. Go to a-mesothelioma-guide.com to learn more about this health condition.

Asbestos Dangers Around Demolition Sites
By Bill Cass
Asbestos is the general name given to a group of organic minerals, all of which are composed of microscopic fibers and can be separated into thin, durable threads. Able to be woven into fabric, or mixed into materials such as cement, asbestos is extremely lightweight and strong, and does not conduct electricity. It also has remarkable fireproofing, heat-proofing and soundproofing capacities. For these reasons, asbestos has been used for many years in a variety of commercial and consumer products as well as in building materials.
Nearly every building constructed in the United States between the end of World War II and the 1980s will likely contain some asbestos, in the form of insulation, ceiling or floor tiles, textured paint or spray-on soundproofing materials, shingles or siding, or steam pipe, furnace or boiler room applications.
If the asbestos-containing material remains in place and intact, its fibers are large and stable - in which case they cannot become airborne or enter the body. Yet when the fibers are stressed, crushed or damaged, they separate into many, much smaller fibers which then become respirable. Once the fibers are inhaled, they can penetrate the soft tissues of the body, such as the organs and membranes.
Particularly vulnerable to asbestos fibers are the lungs, heart and lining of the chest cavity, where they can cause lung disease, pleural fibrosis, asbestosis, or mesothelioma -a rare but deadly cancer. Any activity that could damage the stability of asbestos fibers should therefore only be undertaken by a qualified professional who is trained in asbestos abatement and outfitted with proper protective clothing and a respirator. There are also certain measures which must be taken to ensure the safe disposal of asbestos materials. Since there is no safe level of asbestos exposure, anyone on or near a demolition site runs the risk of inhaling the asbestos particles. Moreover, the fibers can remain airborne for a long time, and can be carried through the air or on fabric such as clothing. Simply because work is not actively being done on a demolition site does not mean that it is devoid of asbestos contamination.
Although the Occupational Safety and Health Administration sets forth stringent procedures for the handling and removal of friable asbestos materials, there are some unscrupulous companies which perform demolition related activities without adequate precautions. If you are concerned about the potential for asbestos exposure at a work site, please contact your local Department of Health or law enforcement agency immediately.
Asbestos.Net is focused on bringing an easy to use and extremely informative website to those searching for information on asbestos and the associated diseases this deadly fiber causes, including lung and mesothelioma cancer. With informative videos and accurate, oncologist reviewed articles, we trust you will find this to be a true resource.

Asbestos in the Home - Where to Find It, What to Do About It, and Associated Health Risks
By Bill Cass
If your home was built between the 1940s and the 1980s, there's a very good chance that it contains asbestos. And if you're planning on doing any kind of renovation in your home today, you need to understand the health hazards associated with asbestos, as well as how to protect yourself from this toxic substance.
Asbestos is an organically occurring fibrous mineral, which has long been prized for its extreme ability to resist heat and fire, as well as its strength, durability, and flexibility. Since it can be woven into cloth or mixed with other materials to create building products, asbestos was widely used during the mid-20th century in a variety of commercial, residential, automotive and maritime applications. It was considered so useful, in fact, that at one time the United States military actually mandated its usage on Navy ships.
Most people, when they think about asbestos, think of insulation. Yet the material is used in many other places in the home, including door gaskets in furnaces, wood stoves or coal stoves; cement sheeting, millboard and paper used as insulation around furnaces and stoves; insulation for steam pipes, boilers and furnace ducts; cement roofing, shingles and siding; patching and joint compounds; textured paints; acoustical tiles used on the ceiling or walls; spray-on soundproofing or decorative material used on walls and ceilings; floor tiles, vinyl sheet flooring and floor tile backings and adhesives.
Unfortunately, asbestos has become known as a carcinogen. Its microscopic, needle-like fibers are easily inhaled when the material is damaged or crushed, and they can lead to devastating diseases such as mesothelioma -a cancer of the lining surrounding the bodily organs-lung cancer, asbestosis and pleural fibrosis. According to the EPA and OSHA, there is no safe level of asbestos exposure.
Because asbestos may lurk in many places, it is vital that you exercise caution when attempting a do-it-yourself home repair, construction or renovation project. First and foremost, if you know that asbestos exists in your home, it may be wise to leave its removal to the professionals. Asbestos abatement should be carried out by trained, qualified and well-equipped contractors. Even if you simply suspect the presence of asbestos, it is recommended that you have air samples taken by professionals.
Often, asbestos-containing materials are safe when they remain undisturbed. It's only when they become damaged that they pose a harm. If a material in your home-such as flooring-contains asbestos, you may consider installing new flooring over it instead of removing it. Likewise, you should avoid drilling, sawing, sanding, scraping, or brushing asbestos materials. If there is debris present that may contain asbestos-crumbling insulation or flood-damaged building materials, for example-do not attempt to sweep, vacuum, remove or clean the area. When in doubt, contact a trained asbestos abatement contractor to perform inspection and testing of your home. These professionals can advise you on proper renovation procedures in order to keep you and your family safe from the hazard of asbestos.

Mesothelioma Symptoms
By Mike Howell
Since mesothelioma is such a rare form of cancer, many people who develop mesothelioma symptoms have never even heard of this disease and are unaware of its symptoms.
Most of the body's internal organs are covered with a protective sac called the mesothelium. Mesothelioma cancer occurs when malignant or cancerous cells appear in the mesothelium. The lungs, heart, and abdominal organs are the most commonly affected organs. Of these, the lung lining (plueral mesothelioma) is most typically infected.
Exposure to asbestos is almost always the cause of mesothelioma. Prior to 1975, asbestos was one of the materials commonly used in the manufacture of building materials. In most cases, symptoms of mesothelioma do not appear for 20 to 40 years after exposure to asbestos.
According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, malignant mesothelioma caused 2,704 deaths during 2005. So, even though asbestos has been used sparsely since 1975, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that deaths caused by mesothelioma will peak during 2010.
Until it reaches advanced stages, this form of cancer provides very few obvious symptoms. It remains dormant for years; however, when it becomes active it quickly attacks the mesothelium and becomes almost impossible to treat successfully. The CDC estimates that 75% of the people who discover symptoms will die within one year of being diagnosed with this cancer. The remainder will die 6 months to several years later.
Plueral mesothelioma (cancer of the lung lining) represents approximately 3 out of 4 of the cases diagnosed. Typical symptoms of this type of mesothelioma include shortness of breath and or/chronic coughing. Of course, since these symptoms are similar to those of allergies or the common cold, it does not occur to most people that they are infected with this type of cancer.
Peritoneal mesothelioma (cancer of the stomach and intestines) also exhibits symptoms that are not obviously recognizable as cancer, such as anemia and fever.
It is important to understand that mesothelioma generally takes decades to develop, but once mesothelioma symptoms are discovered (properly diagnosed) it quickly becomes aggressive. The best course of action is to become aware of the symptoms and to immediately seek diagnosis and treatment.
The first (and most important) step toward diagnosis and treatment is recognizing the symptoms of mesothelioma. For a more detailed look at mesothelioma symptoms, visit http://www.symptoms-of-mesothelioma.com.

Early and Late Signs of Lung Cancer
By David Silva
As with most cancers, the earlier you detect lung cancer the better your chances of survival. In fact, when it's caught in the first stages, there's an almost 50% survival rate after five years. This is a remarkable number considering the fact that overall, lung cancer has only a 15% survival rate.
So the earlier it's diagnosed the better.
And that's why being aware of the signs of lung cancer can mean the difference between surviving and becoming a statistic.
The Early Signs
Since the early signs of lung cancer can easily be mistaken for other conditions, it's often difficult to take them seriously. However, if you're experiencing a chronic cough that doesn't appear related to a virus or allergy, wheezing, chest pain, bouts of bronchitis, or a persistent fever ... it's time to pay attention.
Lung cancer symptoms are often related to the location of the lesions, which settle into the tissues of the lung first. That's why the early signs tend to reflect common cold, flu, and bronchial illnesses. Once the cancer moves beyond the bronchia, new symptoms arise.
The Later Signs
Once lung cancer has metastasize and moved beyond the bronchia, the signs can expand dramatically. For instance, if the cancer has spread to the brain, then common signs might include blurred vision, stroke, and migraines. As you can see, these are serious symptoms that could be related to any number of illnesses. The point is this: don't dismiss them.
In addition, signs such as depression, weight loss, fatigue, shoulder pain, difficulty swallowing, and hoarseness should be taken seriously.
When To See A Doctor
While you don't want to be running to your doctor every time you get the sniffles, if the above signs show themselves, especially if they're persistent, it's better to be safe than sorry. This is particularly true if you've been a smoker or are currently smoking, or if you've ever been exposed to asbestos over an extended period.
It only takes a few hours out of your life to make an appointment and visit your doctor. Here are the signs that should inspire action:
- Unexplained loss of weight
- Persistent shortness of breath
- Stubborn respiratory infections that keep coming back
- A chronic cough that has no apparent cause
- Pain in your chest
- Wheezing
- Fatigue (again, if it has no apparent cause)
The point to remember is that your immune system is busy fighting the cancer. This is why you may find yourself constantly run down and battling nagging infections. It's also one of the reason you may experience mood changes and irritability.
Conclusion
There is a caveat, unfortunately. Nearly a quarter of the people diagnosed with lung cancer never experience any symptoms at all. So while these lung cancer signs can serve as red flags, their absence doesn't necessarily mean everything is just fine. Another reason to see your doctor for an annual checkup.

Mesothelioma Chemotherapy - 5 Commonly Asked Mesothelioma Chemotherapy Questions
By Bello Kamorudeen
Mesothelioma patients usually have some questions that they want answers for when they want to commence on Chemotherapy. These include:
1. What is chemotherapy for mesothelioma?
Chemotherapy involves one or more anti-cancer drugs taken either orally in pill form, or intravenously, or, in the case of pleural mesothelioma, injected directly into the lungs. These drugs inhibit the growth of cancerous cells, but they also damage normal healthy cells as well leading to the development of side effects.
2. What are the common side effects of mesothelioma chemotherapy?
Side effects are very common with the use of many Chemotherapy agents. The commonly seen side effects include:
• hair loss
• nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhea
• constipation
• anemia
• hemorrhaging
Chemotherapy also causes many complicated side effects within the cancerous growth. It is not uncommon in mesothelioma cases to have secondary neoplasms, which are cancerous offshoots of the original tumor that have redirected their growth due to the introduction of anti-cancer drugs.
3. What are the other risks of chemotherapy?
Furthermore, chemotherapy often increases the chances of toxic reactions in the blood, liver, and kidneys, contributing to the potential fatal nature of chemotherapy treatment. Because chemotherapy suppresses the immune system by decreasing antibodies in the bloodstream, patients undergoing chemotherapy are vulnerable to having common infections and illnesses. Other complications are mouth sores which, in combination with the overwhelming nausea and intestinal discomfort caused by chemotherapy, results in many patients failing to eat a healthy diet.
4. What can you do if chemotherapy does not work?
If you suffer from mesothelioma and chemotherapy has failed you, then you should consult with an attorney experienced in handling asbestos-related litigation. You have a right to pursue legal action to seek justice from those who wronged you. Don't delay, for the laws in your state limit the amount of time you have to collect damages, and these statutes of limitations can end your case before it can begin. Contact a lawyer today.
5. Does chemotherapy work well on mesothelioma?
Chemotherapy does not result in a cure for mesothelioma as the cancer is usually too advanced at the time of diagnosis. Newer chemotherapy agents however are very useful in providing symptomatic relief and prolonging the life span of patients especially when used in combination with other modalities of treatment like surgery and radiotherapy.

Two Important Steps That Will Help You to Cope With a Diagnosis of Mesothelioma
By Bello Kamorudeen
Receiving a diagnosis of mesothelioma is undoubtedly one of the most devastating and harrowing experiences one can pass through in life, it is like receiving a certain death sentence. All patients will pass through the classical stages of grief, the initial shock followed by denial, then anger, then depression, and finally acceptance of the grim reality of the terminal disease.
This mix of powerful emotions can overwhelm even those that claim to be very strong individuals. This disease often leaves its victims in a very fragile state of mind.
Even the most compassionate and understanding people can be frustrated by the mortality of mesothelioma, and they can become worn out emotionally very quickly if they do not take steps to help them cope with the disease. Mesothelioma diagnosis is a tragic and devastating revelation, and these are some steps that you can take to help you cope with the disease.
1-Try and overcome the fear and sorrow that usually comes with the diagnosis of a terminal illness. Reach out to your friends, strengthen your religious faith, locate and interact with other victims of the disease to learn how they are coping and share experiences with each other. Also draw strength from within your innate powerful resources that can only manifest when you are facing an almost impossible situation like this.
Face this certain mortality with dignity and poise. Fear and hopelessness will only rob you of what little time you have left, and hinder any positive decisions you might have to make.
2-You still control your life, make a choice to make a difference. Try and pursue legal action against those who knowingly put you at risk of developing this cancer, they purposefully exposed you to asbestos exposure to maximize profit and they must pay for their actions. This will serve justice to a callous and very selfish industry.
Also the monetary compensation you will get will give you the assurance that even after you might have passed away, your family will not have to suffer financially. This will also help you to face inevitable mortality with a lot of courage. So contact a mesothelioma Lawyer as soon as possible.

2 Alternative Treatments For Mesothelioma
By Ric Bai
The destruction of the lungs being exposed to asbestos is what is called mesothelioma cancer. The difficulty with this disease is detection time. It can be many years before you even know you have it. Read more to find out what you can do as an alternative to treat and prevent this deadly disease.
It is always good to practice preventative treatment if you have any doubts about being exposed to asbestos in the past. Don't wait until you have the symptoms, start prevention now!
Two things to do
1/ Nutrition - supplements are being used to help the body. First, they help the growth of healthy cells which combat the mutated cancer cells. Second, they help rid your body of toxins and excess fluids, this relieves the pressure on the chest and intestinal cavities reducing pain and discomfort.
2/ Immuno-augmentive Therapy - effective in the early stages. This therapy uses medicines that strengthen your immune system which then is able to overcome the tumors. Your body can heal itself naturally. So far this therapy is less effective in the later stages of this disease.
The scaring of your lung sacs from the asbestos is what causes destruction over time. Like any other illness early detection is what can save your life. The other thing that can exacerbate any problem is fear.
Cancer and fear are brothers, and brothers who harm you. Your best defense against fear is knowledge. Fear will not solve your problems, it will only make them worse and drain your energy. There is plenty of data out there for you to read, use the energy you have to gain a understanding of what your up against.
There are never any guarantees, but one thing for sure is if you let fear take over you can almost be assured it will win.
Get more information about this subject from the Cancer Monitor a site dedicated to Cancer Treatments. It's time to take back your Health. It's time to enjoy life again and it's your time to find out about all the choices you have for Good Health.

What are the potential effects of asbestos exposure? by Bruce Hugh Maxwell
One of the most common ways to acquire mesothelioma is through contact with asbestos. For this reason having the most current and up to date information about asbestos removal is very important. Does your home or business require asbestos removal? Knowing the answer to this question isn't always easy, which is why it's so important that you seek professional help in assessing the potential harm of asbestos in your home or place of business. Asbestos was widely used throughout Australia during the early 1900's and its use continued well into the next century.
Numerous building consisted of this fibrous mineral including roofing, pipes, and sheeting. If your structure was built before 2003 and you know or even suspect that it may contain asbestos containing material then you should seek the help of a qualified Australian asbestos removal service as soon as possible.
Why was asbestos used? Asbestos was used for more than a century for a number of reasons, primarily because it is:
• Burn resistant
• Provides excellent insulation from heat
• Flexible • Strong
• Has a variety of usages
All of these characteristics make it easy to see why asbestos was so widely used both domestically and commercially, and why chances are there may be asbestos in your structure. What will an asbestos removal company do for me? Although asbestos exposure can be potentially fatal, it does not pose any potential harm unless it has been exposed or damaged.
If you believe that asbestos exposure has occurred you should:
• Avoid contact with the area
• Close all door, windows, and other entryways that lead to the area
• Turn off all types of ventilation to the area that may cause the fibers to become airborne
It is illegal for private citizens and unlicensed individuals to remove asbestos, no matter how minute the size of the problem is. A licensed asbestos removal company should be called in to deal with any asbestos issues and will be able to test your structure to determine whether or not it contains asbestos and to help identify whether or not the asbestos poses any dangers.
What are the potential effects of asbestos exposure? Thousands of people die each year in Australia from the effects of asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma, pleural effusion, asbestosis, and lung cancer are some of the diseases that are caused by exposure to this harmful mineral material. Asbestos is not visible to the naked eye and the symptoms of exposure can take many years to show up. Don't wait until it's too late to take action. The only way to know for sure whether or not you are in need of asbestos removal is to seek professional help.

Survival Rate after Diagnosis of Mesothelioma by Christen Scott
Mesothelioma is a new form of cancer induced by asbestos in lungs, heart and abdomen. Anyhow if anybody inhales the particles of asbestos, they stick to the external lining of internal organs and induce cancer there. This is very complicated form of cancer because it reaches to advanced stage until the patient comes to know about his illness. Therefore, it has very less survival rate. Studies on mesothelioma survival rate have shown that only one person survive out of ten after diagnosed with the disease till three years and only one person survive till five years out of twenty after diagnosed with this new form of cancer.
Symptoms of this cancer do not appear till 40 to 45 years after being infected with asbestos and therefore, the average age of the people diagnosed with this disease is 61 years. The major problem with the diagnosis of mesothelioma is that, its symptoms are similar to other respiratory diseases and therefore, it takes long to declare a person suffering with this life threatening disease. This all leads it to less survival rate. This is called life threatening because still no permanent cure could be found for it. There are some treatments but, they just can extend the life of the patient.
Some factors on which survival rate of mesothelioma is based on are- the size of the tumor, stage in which the patient is, the quantity of fluid in the abdomen and chest, duration it took to diagnose the disease, and whether the tumor can surgically be removed completely or not. Still the studies are being performed on this disease and a permanent treatment to increase the survival rate of the patients.
The treatments known to this disease are very expensive but they can be made affordable by asking for compensation money. For that a lawyer, good at pleading for mesothelioma is to be found. Lawyer helps to get more and more amount as compensation money. Therefore, after coming to know about disease not only a doctor but also a lawyer should be contacted to get the amount and compensation you deserve.

Mesothelioma Chemotherapy-What are your options? by Bello Kamorudeen
Chemotherapy generally means the use of drugs to treat diseases and ailments, but the term is used more commonly to describe the use of anticancer drugs. These drugs treat cancer by killing the cancerous cells.
Anti cancer drugs work by specifically targeting certain processes in cancerous cells to stop cell division and multiplication ultimately leading to the death of the cancerous cells. These drugs are however not highly specific in their mode of action and in addition to killing cancerous cells, anti cancer drugs also kill normal healthy cells such as those involved in hair growth.
There are several options for chemotherapy of mesothelioma cancer. Most of these drugs have side effects like nausea, vomiting, loss of hair, loss of appetite and decreased immunity which makes them more susceptible to infections. Any symptoms experienced while undergoing treatment with chemotherapeutic drugs should be reported to the doctor.
Many patients will consider chemotherapy as a treatment option. Understanding the various chemotherapy options and available treatments often helps patients and their loved ones make the best decision for their personal situation. Evaluating Chemotherapy Options Deciding the best chemotherapy option for treating specific mesothelioma cases depends on a number of factors, including the type of mesothelioma, the stage of the disease, and other treatment being used by the victim. Factors such as overall physical health and age are also taken into consideration when planning a chemotherapy treatment plan.
Currently more than 100 chemotherapy drugs are on the market but only a handful have proven to be appropriate for fighting mesothelioma. In most cases, doctors treating mesothelioma patients recommend combination therapy - the tandem use of two different chemotherapy drugs. These combinations have been proven to be the most successful in treating the cancer.
All treatment options will be thoroughly discussed with the patient's oncologist{specialist cancer doctor} before a decision is made. Patients should provide a full disclosure of their medical history, including details of any prescriptions and over-the-counter medications being taken to ensure treatment is administered with the most appropriate chemotherapeutic agent.
Currently, the most common chemotherapy drugs for mesothelioma include Alimta (the only FDA-approved drug specifically designed for the treatment of mesothelioma), Cisplatin, Carboplatin, Onconase, Gemcitabine, and Navelbine. The medications are usually administered conventionally (by IV or pill form), or may be used in a newer treatment method called heated chemotherapy.
Can Chemotherapy Cure Mesothelioma?
No it can not cure the cancer, currently there is no proven cure for mesothelioma. However, chemotherapy can help control symptoms and shrink tumors and is largely used as a palliative measure to help improve the patient's quality of life. The development of combination treatments has proved successful in achieving longer survival rates and researchers continue to look for new ways to fight this terrible disease.

Were you exposed to asbestos at work?
by Jason Wentworth
The mesothelioma attorneys of Weitz & Luxenberg would like to inform the public about a man who inquired about his legal options after having spent many years working in jobs involving asbestos exposure. At the time he contacted the mesothelioma lawyers of Weitz & Luxenberg, he only had 68% lung capacity left.
In the 1970s, he held the job of auto repairman. Asbestos has been widely used in car parts such as brakes. This is because asbestos does not burn and is therefore suited for use in friction products. Those who work with car brakes use two procedures that involve a high risk of exposure to airborne asbestos fibers. The first procedure is air-blowing brake wear debris. Brake wear debris frequently contains chrysotile asbestos. The second procedure is grinding and beveling new asbestos brake linings or pads. These activities can release asbestos fibers into the air.
Frequently, asbestos fibers can not seen by human beings. Thus, a mechanic working with asbestos containing brakes is at risk for inhaling asbestos fibers without even being aware of the presence of asbestos. Once the fibers are inhaled, they become lodged in the lungs. These fibers can cause cancers like mesothelioma and lung cancer many years later.
Although asbestos is banned in new U.S. vehicles, globalization and international trade permit car components (formerly assembled within the U.S.) to be imported from countries where asbestos regulations are lax or even non-existent. Therefore, auto workers remain a high risk group for asbestos exposure.

Asbestos - From 'Miracle Mineral' to 'Health Hazard'
by David S Judge
Flexibility, durability and the ability to withstand high amounts of heat made Asbestos known as the 'Miracle Mineral' in Ancient Greece. Used for a wide variety of purposes such as funeral outfits for cremation of their kings to everyday household items such as wicks for oil lamps, 'asbestos' itself was a Greek word meaning 'inextinguishable'. Even in the ancient times, this highly valuable substance came to be known as dangerous to the human lungs and was only handled in it's raw form by slaves.
Even in ancient times, the Greeks recognized that asbestos was dangerous; slaves who worked with the material experienced damage to their lungs. Over the years, asbestos was made into cloths that wowed the guests of royal Persian and Chinese households.
Beginning with the industrial revolution in the mid-nineteenth century, asbestos became a popular source of insulation due to its fire retardant properties. In 1879, the first asbestos mine opened up in the Appalachian region of Quebec. Asbestos became widely used in the twentieth century as a fire-retardant coating. It's use ranged from inside drywall, common household roofing and extended to products such as outdoor furniture.
Medical practitioners of the early twentieth century began to consider the safety implications that surrounded this commonly used substance. It wasn't until 1906 that the first asbestos related death was recorded. Unfortunately corporate business investments prevented governments to quickly react to the dangers of this substance. Even thought for decades the American government was aware of the health risks associated with the use of asbestos, it wasn't until the late 1970s that this information came to the publics attention.
What Exactly Is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a silicate mineral made up out of long, stringy crystal fibres. Asbestos fibres when inhaled can cause serious damage to the lungs and in cases, can lead to mesothelioma (a form of lung cancer that is a result from asbestos exposure), or other forms of caner of the lung, as well as a chronic inflammatory condition of the lungs called 'Asbestosis'.
Asbestos fibres are much thinner than the human hair. These fibres are highly dangerous as they can easily become airborne and find their way into the eyes, skin and lungs. Repeated, prolonged exposure to asbestos leads almost inevitably to serious illness.
Asbestos in Australia -
In Australia during the post-war period of 1945 to 1980, asbestos was used heavily in construction, shipyards, and power stations. It was also mined in Australia and exported around the world. Although the dangers of the material were already known, it took until the mid-1970s for the use of asbestos to slow down. Today, people exposed to asbestos in Australia thirty or forty years previously are suing mining companies and other industries for asbestos-related illnesses.
Asbestos Removal in Brisbane -
Asbestos removal in Brisbane is big business: several asbestos companies offering Brisbane Asbestos Removal exist to remove asbestos from homes, buildings, and especially asbestos removal from roofs, where asbestos in home construction was concentrated. Roof replacement in Brisbane should be only ever handled by a licensed, fully certified company. Consider that asbestos removal and Brisbane roofing replacement due to asbestos can put families at risk if they are not properly handled, so finding an asbestos removal Brisbane company that is qualified to do this job is of prime importance. As asbestos was a common substance used in roofing, it vital that companies chosen for all roof replacement work should he thoroughly investigated prior to hiring.

All About Mesothelioma
By Bhavesh LB
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is normally caused by asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma is cancer that occurs in the mesothelium.
Mesothelioma:
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer affecting the cells of mesothelial lining in the chest and abdomen. Mesothelioma cancer can develop in the tissues covering the lungs or the abdomen. Mesothelioma has also been found in the stomach and other abdominal organs but it is much rarer in those areas than are both pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma. Mesothelioma can also occur in the ovaries and scrotum. Mesothelioma invades the chest wall or the esophagus during the second stage.Mesothelioma also takes a long time to develop (typically 15-40 years), so patients today could have been exposed prior to the 1980s when asbestos was not highly regulated. Mesothelioma is not caused by smoking, as lung cancer so often is.
Symptoms:
Symptoms One of the most common symptoms of mesothelioma is an accumulation of fluid between the lining of the lung and the chest cavity. Symptoms include:abdominal painascites, or an abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen a mass in the abdomen problems with bowel function weight loss. Symptoms such as trouble swallowing, pain, or swelling of the neck and face can be indications that the cancer has spread beyond the mesotheliom to other parts of the body. Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include persistent pain in the chest and severe difficulty breathing caused by pleural effusion, or an accumulation of fluid in the pleural lining Cough, weight loss, and fever are also common symptoms. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and abdominal pain and swelling due to a buildup of fluid in the abdomen. Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos.
Diagnosis:
The key to long-term survival from treatment of mesothelioma is early diagnosis, which enables the greatest potential for success from standard therapies. Diagnosis begins with a review of the patient's medical history, including any history of asbestos exposure. Diagnosis of Mesothelioma is based on a pathological exam, more commonly referred to as a biopsy.Since this disease can be hard to diagnosis and costly to treat, it may require the consultation of an experienced attorney. When conclusive diagnosis cannot be made from fluid samples, diagnosis is often made through a surgical procedure called a throrascopy. The average age at diagnosis of mesothelioma is between 50 and 70 years old, with men being affected three to five times more often than women. The diagnosis may be suspected with chest X-ray and CT scan, and is confirmed with a biopsy (tissue sample) and microscopic examination. The median survival time is 17 months, with ten percent of patients living for three years after diagnosis.
Conclusion:
Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer which is fairly rare although in the last few decades the number of people who have died from it have dramatically increased. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer, but the deadliest one of all. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer and only affects between 2,000 and 3,000 people in the United States per year. Mesothelioma is less common in African Americans than in white Americans. Mesothelioma is rare in people under age 55. National Cancer Institute stats show that 3000 new diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma is reported each year. Mesothelioma is not always fatal and that is the hope to hold on to.

Pleural Mesothelioma Cancer Involves The Lining Of The Lung
by Liz Allen
What is Pleural Mesothelioma?
Pleural Mesothelioma or malignant pleural mesothelioma is cancer in the layer of the lungs that can spread to the lungs. The spread of the tumor over the pleura results in pleural thickening. This hinders the reflexivity of the pleura and encases the lungs in an increasing restrictive belt. With the lungs thus restricted, they get constricted in no time and a person is always out of breath.
Pleural mesothelioma can be:
* Diffuse and malignant (carcinogenic)
* Localized and benign (non-cancerous)
Benign pleural mesothelioma can be removed surgically, but the malignant tumors are the real terror heads.
Most common among other mesothelioma cases, Pleural Mesothelioma is caused due to exposure to blue asbestos for a longer period of time, say 20 years, in which time the disease incubates only to show its fearful countenance via certain symptoms.
The symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma
The symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma include difficulty in breathing, difficulty in sleeping, pain in the chest and abdominal regions, blood vomits, weakness, weight loss, loss of appetite, lower back pains, persistent coughing, hoarseness of voice, sensory loss and difficulty in swallowing.
Diagnosis of Pleural Mesothelioma
The first step is to go through a chest X-ray or a CT scan (computed chest tomograph), which will reveal a pleural thickening and an effusion. This is followed by a bronchoscopy. However, it should always be left to a medical practitioner for a better understanding of the respective cases. Another method is a biopsy, which can be a needle biopsy, an open biopsy, or a thoracoscopy, where a mini camera is inserted inside the body and with that a tissue sample is attained for further diagnosis.
Treatment of Pleural Mesothelioma
Treatment is directly proportional to the time of the revelation of the disease, i.e., at an early stage the tumor can be removed through surgery.
A pioneering mesothelioma treatment option is immunotherapy, e.g., intrapleural inoculation of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is a useful mesothelioma treatment in which an effort is made to intensify the immune response.
Radiation treatment and chemotherapy is probably then the answer to the malignant pleural mesothelioma, but this can aid the pain management only; there's no escaping death with Pleural Mesothelioma.
Side effects of Treatment
The side effects and penalty of mesothelioma lung cancer treatment are more than its treatment, which is damaged healthy tissues, a state of absolute fatigue ness; excessive radiation causes the skin to become red, dry and itchy.
Other side effects of radiotherapy are nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, urinary discomfort and a sudden reduction in the number of white blood corpuscles.
The average life span of a person with Pleural Mesothelioma is up to 6 months to a year and the maximum can reach up to 5 years - the magnesium-silicate mineral fibers take its toll that's more than painful.
Other factors that may accelerate the possibility of pleural mesothelioma are chronic lung infections, tuberculous pleuritis, radiation (Thorotrast), exposure to the simian virus 40 (SV40) or mineral fibers (Zeolite) and tobacco smoking to a certain extent.
Pleural Mesothelioma does not give a person the avenue for fair play. Though the existence depends much on the various stages of the disease, it is an ultimate killing menace that sucks out the life of the common man.

Environmental Hazard
by Ian O'Malley
Asbestos has long been used in buildings because of a number of valuable properties. One of the most valuable properties that asbestos possesses is that it's insulating. Although it has long been known as a health risk, it's only recently that other materials have replaced asbestos including fibreglass.
Risks of Asbestos
The main risk of asbestos is that the particles are very fine, these can easily be inhaled and accumulate in the lungs. Normally the people that suffer from related conditions are the people that mine the mineral, process it and install it.
There are a number of trade's people that are involved with the fitting of asbestos related parts who can also suffer from asbestos related illnesses. Asbestos has also been used in cement, clothing, and even in gas masks. Although asbestos is no longer used, these people are still often at risk when it comes to removing and demolishing buildings that could possibly contain asbestos.
The danger of asbestos is that breathing in the particles can cause lung cancer and related diseases. This condition may fist be noticed by breathing difficulty, which will then result in lung cancer. Chest pain may be a sign of asbestos related diseases, and could also be an indication that the disease is getting worse and developing.
Of course these symptoms are not limited to asbestos related diseases; they can also be caused by a wide range of different conditions. If you have any form of exposure to asbestos then your doctor will use this to diagnose your condition and get to the root of the problem.
Mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer that only affects people that have been exposed to asbestos. This is a particularly nasty form of cancer that can attack the lining of the lungs and abdomen. Around 80% of patients suffering from this form of cancer have had some form of exposure to asbestos.
It can take 20 to 40 years after exposure to asbestos for the effects of exposure to become apparent. This type of cancer is fatal in a large number of cases.
There is no known cure for asbestosis and related diseases. It is important that you keep detailed accounts of any history where you might have come into contact with the material. It is also possible that toxic asbestos dust has been breathed in from clothes of someone that worked with the substance. Your doctor may use chest X-rays to look for any abnormalities and find out about possible asbestos diseases.
If you work with asbestos, especially when removing or disturbing it then it is very important you use the provided safety equipment to ensure that none of it gets into your body. The problem is that the particles are so light it's very easy to breathe them in. This is why asbestos removers often wear all over body suits to remove asbestos.
Hiring a professional
When removing asbestos it is very important to hire a professional such as a1asbestos.com.au. A1asbestosremoval offer asbestos removals throughout Australia, including asbestos removal Queensland, and asbestos removal Brisbane.
