I am 21 years old and live in Estonia. I like to write about various different topics but mostly about Health and Fitness. But occasionally ... ...
It has been well known for the entire second half of the 20. century that smoking caused lung cancer. Smoking not only increases the risk of lung cancer among smokers, but the risk of esophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer, oral cavity cancer, kidney cancer and also laryngeal cancer is increased as well. These forms of cancers are expected to rise among women as a result of their increased levels of smoking.
The heavy use of tobacco not only causes different types of cancer, but it also increases the risk of many cardiovascular diseases. In eastern and also central europe more than 400 000 premature deaths are caused by tobacco smoking each year. The current levels of lung cancer among young men in eastern and central europe is greater than ever before. Cigarette smoking is unfortunately still going up in central and eastern europe and also in China, where tobacco related deaths are increasing very rapidly. Lung cancer is the major tobacco-related tumor and the leading cause of cancer death in men in almost all developed countries. Since lung cancer is frequently fatal, mortality rates are high, and consequently so are the social costs.
Cigarette smoking among women has also increased dramatically. More and more women take up cigarette smoking all over the world. For many years it appeared that the rates of lung cancer where low and that tobacco was not having the same effect for women as it has for men. But this has now turned out to be false and there is no evidence that the risk of lung cancer because of smoking is greater in men than in women. It takes a long time between the exposure and the effect. Lung cancer now exceeds breast cancer as the leading cancer cause of death in women in Canada, the USA, Scotland, and many other countries.
Cigarette smoking kills half of all those who adopt the habit, with half of the death occurring in middle age and each losing about 20 years of non-smoker's life expectancy. Lung cancer is of course the most common cause of death but cigarette smoking can cause death in 24 different ways. Cigarette smoking in men has been declining while it has been increasing in women. And also the lung cancer rates have increased among women and decreased among men. Tobacco is a addictive drug, there is no such thing as a "safe" cigarette, young adults should be convinced not to smoke and smokers should be helped and urged to stop. Hopefully some day in the future we can say "how smoking caused lung cancer" not "how smoking causes lung cancer."

Spirituality Can Play an Important Role in Coping with Mesothelioma
by john smith
Recent studies have concluded that spiritual people are better able to cope with the acute illnesses. People who believe in any faith are better able to withstand the rigors of long and painful treatment than people who are not at all spiritual. Even people having an optimistic outlook towards life in general get cured early and are able to live a longer and a meaningful life in comparison to those people who have a pessimistic view of life.
Being spiritual does not mean that one should necessary believe in any particular faith or religion. In fact it means that one is able to see things from a broader perspective. Being spiritual means that one is able to transcend his notions of time and space and have a more detached view of life. People who did not believe in any religion or were not able to view life from a perspective that was different from their earlier perspective were not able to withstand the rigors and pain that is generally associated with any terminal illness. People who had a broader outlook towards life and were spiritual in their perspective fared better in their struggle against diseases like mesothelioma. Although being spiritual does not means that the pain and suffering associated with the cancer of mesothelioma is reduced by any measure. Being spiritual means that the individual can have better tolerance and has a happy opinion about their health.
Some activities like meditation, yoga etc has been immensely beneficial for the people suffering from mesothelioma. Spirituality also means making the patients suffering from mesothelioma feel a part of the community. They should be encouraged to spend their time doing some meaning full activities and feel like an important part of the mainstream.

Asbestos Discovered at Olympic Stadium
by Joe Silver
Recent reports claim that construction on the Olympic stadium in London has stopped due to the discovery of asbestos exposure.
Asbestos was reportedly found at the site where the 2012 Olympic stadium is to be built for the Olympic games.
Construction Workers at Risk of Developing Asbestos Cancer
After the asbestos was found, officials halted work on a section of the stadium as a cautionary measure.
Since asbestos is a cancer causing material that can be extremely harmful when ingested or inhaled, those who were working on the stadium were put at risk.
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) issued a warning that exposure to asbestos can cause tumors and various types of cancer.
ODA Puts Health First
Since construction on the stadium began three months earlier than originally planned, the delay is not expected to affect the Olympic games.
"The health and safety of the work force is our No. 1 priority," says Lawrence Waterman, who heads the health and safety at the ODA. "We are working with the relevant authorities and expect work to restart progressively as protective measures are put in place in the next few days."

Synergistic Effect (Between Cigarette Smoking and Asbestos Exposure)
by Erica Grundin
Research has proven, time and again that cigarette smoking does not contribute to developing mesothelioma. In fact, patients who never smoked were more likely to develop mesothelioma, than those who did smoke. Studies also show that asbestos exposure, alone, doesn't cause lung tissue cancer.
Lung tissue is the functional organ tissue that delivers oxygen and expels carbon dioxide. The visceral pleura is the inner mesothelial lining that encases the lobes of both lungs. There is also an outer (parietal pleura) mesothelial lining on the inside of the chest cavity (rib cage). Smoking has not been shown to increase the risk of visceral pleural mesothelioma, the most common location for pleural mesothelioma.
What has been shown is that smoking is a known cause of lung tissue cancer. Other studies have shown the probability of developing lung cancer is between four and eleven times greater in smokers than non-smokers, and as much as 27 times greater in heavy smokers.
What is the Effect of Smoking Combined with Asbestos Exposure?
The combination of asbestos exposure and smoking is far more destructive than either by itself. This multiplication of risk is called a synergistic effect. Synergism produces an outcome that is greater than the sum of the components. In this situation, the outcome is the number of people who develop lung cancer, and the components are smokers exposed to asbestos compared to smokers with no exposure to asbestos.
Smokers exposed to asbestos have a 50 to 90 times greater risk of lung cancer than smokers with no asbestos exposure. Add to this the risk of COPD for all smokers, and studies show the rate of COPD also is much higher in smokers with asbestos exposure. Needless to say the risk for developing both COPD and lung cancer are also many times greater in combination with asbestos exposure.
Asbestosis is caused by particles that lodge in the airways and alveoli, the little sacs where oxygen and carbon dioxide cross to and from the bloodstream. Chronic inflammation of these tissues eventually causes scarring with the development of fibrotic tissue. Fibrotic tissue is thick and rigid, It causes fibrotic lung disease that restricts the expansion of lung tissue, and impedes the necessary gas exchange.
It is conceivable that a smoker exposed to asbestos could eventually develop and suffer from a combination of obstructive lung disease, restrictive lung disease and lung cancer.
What Good Would It Do To Quit Smoking?
It's worth noting that smokers who have a history of asbestos exposure can reduce their risk of lung cancer as low as two to six times that of the general population in as little as ten years after quitting smoking. While this is still an undesirable risk, it is an immense improvement from 50-90 times. Since this is a controllable risk it is worth quitting smoking, however difficult that may be.

Advanced Malignant Mesothelioma And Its Treatment
by Sarah Adams
Although chemotherapy and surgery are the most common forms of treatment, participating in clinical trials can provide you with alternative mesothelioma treatment options. Increased awareness of mesothelioma and other asbestos-caused diseases has led to an increase on medical research to cure and control asbestos-caused cancers and related asbestos heart and respiratory diseases. Mesothelioma treatment and treatment options for advanced malignant mesothelioma are not limited to surgery and chemotherapy.
Advanced malignant mesothelioma clinical studies with Cisplatin, now often used with chemotherapy, proved Cisplatin to be effective. Drugs produce a medical benefit by themselves, and they can produce a different benefit when combined with other drugs - a chemical reaction that produces a third result. Mesothelioma clinical trials with Gemcitabine proved Gemcitabine to be ineffective. Perhaps the most common clinical trials and mesothelioma treatment options for advanced malignant mesothelioma involve chemotherapy and drug combinations. However, mesothelioma clinical trials using Cisplatin and Gemcitabine together are proving to be even more promising. Finding the right drug combinations to slow tumor growth and contribute to improved pain management is one of the fastest paths to wide-spread availability of new mesothelioma treatment options.
Anti-angiogenic therapies focus on natural body substances that affect the mesothelioma cancer's growth, including the use of drugs made of these substances to inhibit cancer growth factors. Advanced malignant mesothelioma patients have a higher vascular endothelial growth factor than patients with other cancers.Anti-angiogenic therapy are a biological therapy based on interfering with the blood vessels that the cancer needs to survive.
Immunotherapy is also classified as a biological therapy. It concentrates on building immunity to the cancer cells. Immunotherapy can involve vaccines, and in cases of mesothelioma, these are likely to be injected in the pleural region. IL-2 is made naturally by the body, and clinical trials have demonstrated its success at treating mesotheliomas in the early stages, mesothelioma stages one and two, but not effective in treating advanced malignant mesothelioma.
Photodynamic therapy has gained increase attention in many medical fields for various treatment options, including mesothelioma treatment. Photodynamic therapy uses light and heat to kill cancer cells. It has been successful in treating other cancers.
Gene therapy is also a biological therapy and explores using the body's natural substances to treat mesothelioma stages. The medical premise is to replace the genes in cancer cells with healthy genes. Oncogenes contribute to the fast spreading of the cancer cells and tumor suppressor genes stop cells from spreading.
Mesothelioma treatment for advanced malignant mesothelioma is slowly finding new mesothelioma treatment options. It takes years to evaluate the clinical significance of a clinical trial and medical research to prove that a mesothelioma treatment option is a promising and viable alternative. Thorough medical research on mesothelioma treatment contributes to safe medical treatment options being widely-available to the public. Mesothelioma in any of its stages is dangerous, but with researchers working together, mesothelioma treatment options will be safer and mesothelioma research will someday find a cure.
Advanced malignant mesothelioma can be treated by following one or more of the options mentioned above as it is necessary.
