Recent reports claim that construction on the Olympic stadium in London has stopped due to the discovery of asbestos exposure.
Asbestos was reportedly found at the site where the 2012 Olympic stadium is to be built for the Olympic games.
Construction Workers at Risk of Developing Asbestos Cancer
After the asbestos was found, officials halted work on a section of the stadium as a cautionary measure.
Since asbestos is a cancer causing material that can be extremely harmful when ingested or inhaled, those who were working on the stadium were put at risk.
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) issued a warning that exposure to asbestos can cause tumors and various types of cancer.
ODA Puts Health First
Since construction on the stadium began three months earlier than originally planned, the delay is not expected to affect the Olympic games.
"The health and safety of the work force is our No. 1 priority," says Lawrence Waterman, who heads the health and safety at the ODA. "We are working with the relevant authorities and expect work to restart progressively as protective measures are put in place in the next few days."
