12 Year Old Boy Diagnosed with Peritoneal Mesothelioma

It has been reported that a 12 year old boy has been diagnosed with the asbestos cancer, peritoneal mesothelioma. Two fundraising events were held to raise money for the boy's family. One was a bike run and the other was a picnic. The boy was diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer on March 24, 2010. At the time of diagnosis, the cancer had already progressed to the fourth stage of mesothelioma. Treatment options at this stage are typically of limited effectiveness.
Malignant mesothelioma is almost exclusively caused by exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring and deadly mineral. Typically, people who have worked with asbestos-containing products such as brakes, roofing shingles and tiles are diagnosed with mesothelioma. These people are often mechanics, sheet metal workers, construction workers and electricians. Usually, people who have never worked with asbestos containing products can still develop mesothelioma through secondary asbestos exposure. Secondary asbestos exposure occurs when a person inhales asbestos fibers from the clothes or body of someone who works with asbestos containing products. It is unclear how the boy was exposed to asbestos.
The boy's parents knew that their son had a health problem when he began experiencing weight loss, fatigue, night sweats and headaches (common mesothelioma symptoms). A medical investigation revealed that the boy was suffering from peritoneal mesothelioma. Reportedly, he is the youngest person to be afflicted with mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma can also occur in the chest cavity and that type of mesothelioma is known as pleural mesothelioma (or lung mesothelioma). Pleural mesothelioma is the more common type of mesothelioma. It is caused by inhaled asbestos fibers that become trapped in the lungs. Decades later, the trapped asbestos fibers lead to the development of pleural mesothelioma. Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are difficulty breathing, coughing of blood and chest pain.
At the present time, there is no cure for mesothelioma cancer however, there are treatment options that can be effective for some mesothelioma patients. The mesothelioma treatment PDT (photodynamic therapy) uses a light source that emits light of a certain wavelength to destroy cancer cells. Side effects of this treatment technique include skin discoloration, and increased sensitivity to light.

Although not dangerous in a normal state, its still a bit worrisome knowing that many buildings still contain the dangerous material, whose fibers can be released into the air during constructions projects or fires and earthquakes. A Brief History of Asbestos

Asbestos is a rather remarkable naturally occurring substance. Known as "rock floss" or "mountain leather", man has found many uses for asbestos throughout the ages.
The word "asbestos" comes from the Greek name for "inextinguishable" or "indestructible." For thousands of years asbestos has been admired for its heat- and fire-resistant properties as well as its strength.
There is evidence that Egyptians, five thousand years ago, wrapped the bodies of their pharaohs in asbestos in preparation for their journey to the next world.
It's been found in ancient Scandinavian pottery.
It's been found in ancient Roman lamp wicks and table cloths. The easily cleaned their table linens by just throwing them into a fire. After which they just removed them and shook them out.
As Industrial Age machinery spread through the US and Canada, asbestos was used to insulate machinery and factories.
Around 1880 large asbestos deposits were discovered in Russia and Canada. This marked the start of the modern commercial asbestos industry.
By the beginning of the Second World War "rock floss" was extensively used in a wide range of products that included cement, insulation, packing materials, and nonflammable fabrics.
It was used in everything from clutch facings and brake shoes in cars to paper products, small kitchen appliances, and wallboards in homes.
By the time of the Korean War began asbestos was used in literally thousands of products, including cigarette filters.
Within the next twenty years the deadly results associated with the use of asbestos started to become more well known by the public.
Then, in the 1970s, the United States government began to ban the production of many products that contained this substance. Consequently, asbestos use started to decline sharply.
However, people who had regularly worked with materials and products that contained asbestos had already been exposed to the substance. And an increasingly large number of these people were succumbing to illnesses such as mesothelioma and asbestosis.
In addition, the family members of employees who worked for ship building, construction, mining, and other factories whose products used asbestos were also getting ill. This happened because asbestos fibers were being brought home on the employee's clothing.
Today lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other illnesses related to asbestos are being increasingly recognized as diseases that were probably caused by second hand exposure to these fibers.
People who live close to asbestos mines may be drinking water that contains the material. People who live in homes that were constructed with asbestos products may be breathing in the fibers as these materials wear down and the fibers are released into the air.
Asbestos fibers can be contaminating drinking water as it is released from the cement pipes that are used to carry the water or after it is filtered through water filters that contain "mountain leather".
Because of these water-related risks the EPA now mandates that water suppliers regularly test water samples.
The best way to protect you and your family from asbestosis, mesothelioma, and other asbestos-related illnesses is to limit the amount of exposure at work and at home.

Pleural Mesothelioma is a form of cancer, that may be caused largely by exposure to asbestos, that has an effect on the various layers of the pleura about the chest wall structure. A couple of signs or symptoms include things like difficulty breathing and losing weight. But, exposure to asbestos does not always lead to cancer. Therapies for it and why it affects some individuals but not others is continuously being explored.
X-rays will often verify the medical diagnosis of Pleural Mesothelioma after which an individual will be sent to a medical oncologist. The oncologist can ascertain what stage the patient is in and suggest treatment plans. Similar to other forms of cancer there are actually four stages. Finding a Pleural Mesothelioma prognosis is hard because each and every circumstance is influenced by the patient's personal health condition and stage they are in.
When merely the outermost membrane of the pleura about the chest wall or diaphragm is afflicted by Pleural Mesothelioma it's referenced as "stage 1." At this stage the oncologist may well recommend radiation therapies. In the event the doctor makes reference to it as "stage 1b" that will indicate it may have also spread to the inner layer, nearer to the lungs, but still only having an effect on one side of the individual's chest.
Stage 2 of Pleural Mesothelioma could mean this has spread through both layers of the pleura as well as developed a mass or tumor. Around this stage the doctor might highly recommend a surgical procedure to remove the tumor and also suggest the surgery be accompanied by a series of radiation or chemotherapy treatment plans.
If it has gotten to the wall membrane protecting the peracardium, this would be viewed as "stage 3." There may nevertheless the possibility for surgical removing of the impacted tissue. Stage 3 can also mean the condition has spread to the lymph nodes on the one impacted side. At this point radiation or chemotherapy are often advised.
If it has spread to the other part in the chest wall, and/or the lymph nodes on the other side, as well as to additional areas of the body this is regarded "stage 4." At this stage there are just too many areas affected to safely and effectively remove all of the diseased tissue through surgery.
Despite the fact that in most all cases the Pleural Mesothelioma prognosis is extremely poor, many people recognized with it have lasted much longer than expected. If the oncologist has not been able to present conventional treatment plans he or she may well refer the individual for one of many clinical studies that can be found.
Besides Mesothelioma that affects the pleura there is other forms of cancer that strikes the coating that covers many organs. Is Asbestos in Your Home?

Asbestos has been recognized since ancient Greek and Roman times as a beneficial material that can withstand fire and heat, as well as electricity and chemicals. Thus, it is no surprise that this silicate mineral has been used in everything from submarines to homes as an insulating material. Sadly, though, we now know that asbestos can cause dangerous and even deadly disorders such as asbestosis and mesothelioma.
Although asbestos came under strict governmental regulation beginning in the 1980s, many homes built before and during this decade still contain asbestos. At one point in time, asbestos could be found in everything from ceiling tiles to counter tops, vinyl flooring to wall insulation. If your home was built prior to the 1980s, these components of your house may be releasing dangerous asbestos particles into the air.
Asbestos is divided into two different categories once it is used as an additive: friable and non-friable. Friable means that it can release microscopic fibers into the air, and non-friable means that the fibers are firmly secured in the material. Asbestos is dangerous when it comes in the friable form.
If you suspect that friable asbestos is in your home, there are several steps that you can take to protect yourself. First, it is impossible to determine if a substance is asbestos just by looking at it. You can send in samples of items to specialized labs for asbestos testing. However, you must be extremely careful when getting a sample.
If you want to cut a material to send it in for asbestos sampling, disturbing the fibers can send them airborne, where you can ingest or inhale these carcinogenic particles. Thus, if you absolutely must send it in for testing, you should make sure that you are wearing goggles and a face mask to protect yourself form inhaling asbestos. You can water it down very gently to help the particles stick together. Next, you can cut a tiny sample, never touching the material with your bare skin.
Should the sample test positive for asbestos, you can either have it removed by a professional or have it sealed with paint or another coating to keep it from being friable.

Outside factors like gender and race can also play a part. These numbers are an indication of how many patients survive for five years or more with the disease, but do not indicate the type of treatment the patient is receiving or whether the disease was cured or merely managed.
The general health of a patient can affect their ability to survive for five years or longer. Those in good health have a higher rate of survival. In any form or stage of cancer, a patient who has strong, healthy lungs in general will be able to survive longer than someone who is unhealthy. Having other medical conditions unrelated to the disease can also bring down survival percentages.
Gender may also be a factor in the survival rate. Women tend to have a higher survival rate than men in all stages and forms of lung cancer. The overall five-year rate is 16 percent for women and 12 percent for men. The reason for this disparity is not yet known. Researchers understand that cancer is different for women than men, but aren't yet sure why. Some have posited that genetic differences may cause women to be more vulnerable to the disease and that the hormone estrogen could somehow affect the development of the cancer.

This therapy, in either form, is often partnered with surgery, but can be employed independently. While not a cure for the disease, radiation therapy is effective in relieving pain and symptoms associated with mesothelioma, at least short term.
Aside from those common treatments, experimental and less popular options do exist. These include photodynamic, gene, and immunotherapy. Additionally, some patients choose to rely on alternative therapies, which, though unconventional, may help control symptoms and improve quality of life for sufferers. Therapies like acupuncture and massage can work to benefit the well being of patients, though these options will not cure the disease.
Researchers are aiming to find cures for asbestos-related diseases via clinical trials. Despite that, China is now the only country in the world that has already approved gene therapy. On October 16, 2003, the drug named Gendicine was approved by the State Food and Drug Administration of China. Gendicine had more than 5 years of clinical trials before it was approved. They have currently used this therapy on over 4500 patients and have followed their patient's progress for over 6 years. Now, hundreds of cancer patients from around the world are travelling to Beijing to receive this leading edge treatment.
The clinical trials of Gendicine included 135 patients and results showed that 64% of patients showed tumour regression after 8 weekly injections in combination with radiation therapy. According to the clinical trial results, using Gendicine with chemotherapy and radiation therapy can improve the efficacy by 3 times. The only side effect of Gendicine is a typical overnight fever.
Since there are no other approved gene therapy treatments in the world, many desperate cancer patients from North America and Europe are travelling to Beijing, China to receive treatment of Gendicine.
Richard Weissenborn from Texas, USA, had tongue cancer that had spread to his lymph nodes and was given two months to live in July of 2006. He was treated with Gendicine and chemotherapy by Dr. Li Dinggang at the Haidan Hospital in Beijing at a cost of about $30,000 U.S.
After two cycles of treatments, over two months, a pet scan showed that he was cancer free. Anti-asbestos activists and asbestos victims - those suffering from the fatal side effects like mesothelioma or asbestosis - met in Turin, Italy to discuss the worldwide ban and justice against the companies that continue to use the material.
Due to its inexpensive nature, the material has been a favorite in developing countries, in part because it has been banned in other countries, including the European Union since 2005. Many of the harmful side effects, like the lung cancer mesothelioma, can take upwards of 30 to 40 years to manifest, which makes it difficult to pinpoint the initial asbestos exposure.
An Italian mesothelioma lawsuit is the largest class action lawsuits in the world, claim a major construction company. Asbestos contamination has affected more than 6,000 people in Italy and claimed the lives of at least 2,000. The plaintiffs - residents of four Italian cities where the company had factories as well as former employees who handled the material - are expected to seek several million Euros in compensation.
Ban Asbestos, a worldwide organization whose goal is ban the fibrous material and "end the impunity" towards companies that use asbestos, organized the meeting.

You can be living life with all its perks that a good healthy life can bring. You make plans for the future which you intend to fulfill, but there is always roadblock that life puts in front of us when we least need it. A diagnose of cancer in this case lung cancer can be devastating to a person.
The person that is diagnosed with this disease faces an emotional rollercoaster. The first thoughts and fears of a person told of its illness is, are they going to lose their life. And the second fear is how long they have to live. So many decisions to make and so many things to consider, and so many questions how,when,where and the why.
The worse time to make all those decisions is right after your diagnosed and told of your illness. If, it is not necessary or an emergency to make decision right then, you should take some time to digest what is going on. Get second opinions on diagnosis, treatments and try to get some counseling.
Lung cancer is a devastating cancer, if you have never seen someone suffer from this cancer,it is one that is ugly to see in someone that has it. In the later stages your breathing is quite labored and you lose your appetite, hair and your physical strength. In the last stage you begin to spit up blood and now your breathing has to be helped by oxygen. Your final days, are the most horrible days ever, you totally begin to throw up gobs of blood through your mouth, nose and ears. And, then finally it is all over... with so much suffering. Even if it sounds cruel you are thankful your loved one is gone. His/Her suffering and pain is over.
Lung cancer can be prevented by you making wise choices in life. You are only hurting yourself if you pickup that nasty habit of smoking cigarettes. You have to live with the consequences. You do not want to a statistic, do you? Treatments are painful and the emotional stress on you and your family and friends is not worth it. WHAT YOU WANT IS BEAUTIFUL LIFE!
We need to love ourselves and our body, in order to protect it as much as we can from getting ill. Don't pickup that cigarette it's not worth it. Love yourself and stay healthy their is a whole life ahead of you to live and enjoy.

My Journey As a Cancer Survivor

Yes, that's me a survivor, a cancer survivor. I think that in many ways we are all survivors of one sort or another. We have all gone through our own trials and tribulations in our lives.
It is my hope that this "journey" may help those who have been diagnosed with, are going through, or finished their cancer treatments. It is also my hope that the families of those diagnosed can gain a little insight, from my perspective, of what we go through. So here's my journey, the bearing of my soul, the good, the bad and the ugly...and yes there was good that came out of this journey.
During the spring of 2008, I had gained some weight as we all do over the winter. I began walking, 2 1/2 miles in the morning and a mile at night and doing quite well. I was very dedicated and determined to lose about 25 pounds. OK so I was a smoker, I know I've heard it all, had the looks and it's no wonder why you got cancer, wow talk about adding insult to injury. But even with my smoking I was quite active and had absolutely NO, not a one symptom of lung cancer.
My mom had Ovarian Cancer when I was a teenager and I remember picking her up at the hospital after her surgery. My niece at age 16 had Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2003. A friend of hers had grabbed her from behind kidding around and felt a lump. And her whirlwind began. I would go to her home every other day to give her her injections and help with her care. I was very involved with her treatment and knowledgeable about "cancer." I come from a large family, 6 of us and with all our extended families and relatives, these were the only cases of cancer in our lineage.
I remember walking up the stairs in my home at the end of the summer and becoming out of breath and thinking geez, I wonder if I have cancer.....that was it. Just a thought and it was gone.
I am a firm believer in positive thinking, not a particularly religious person but a fiercely spiritual person. I believe in the power of prayer and positive affirmations and a higher being. The Universe. I think that this helped me tremendously during this time.

The Day The Whirlwind Began.
I was having an argument with my husband, can't even remember what it was about, and then I was having an anxiety attack, can you imagine in the middle of an argument. Since I have some medical issues, I decided to go to hospital and as mad as I was I told my husband not to come with me. Don't get me wrong I love the guy but needed some space.
When I got to the hospital, they ran the regular tests which came back normal and then did a chest x-ray and then a CT Scan, hmm just a little out of the ordinary but when you are in the hospital you go with the flow. And then I sat and sat and waited and waited with the hubby, yes he came down to the hospital. Being the stubborn type of person I am, I got dressed after 5 hours and told the nurse I was going home since no one had come to talk to me. The Doctor came in and told me I couldn't go home they were transferring me to the main hospital because I had Lung Cancer. BOOM Just Like That. Can we say bedside manner, none. I knew but I knew I would be OK.
I told the Dr that I was going home and would call my own doctor in the morning, which is what I did and the journey began.
In retrospect, I wished I had asked more questions and weighed the options more carefully but once you are diagnosed everything happens so fast you almost don't have time to think. It becomes a whirlwind very quickly. It is so important to chose your own doctors who you are comfortable with and you can talk to and ask questions.
I called my doctor Monday morning and got an appointment that day, hey when you say you've been diagnosed with Cancer, everyone gets in high gear. My doctor confirmed the results and the whirlwind started. It took about a week to get an appointment with the oncologist. During which time my husband got laid off from his job. Good and bad, yes he was around but he does not deal well with illness nor me being sick. I didn't tell anyone, not even my children and swore my husband to secrecy. I did tell my neighbor, who was the biggest part of my care, that I'll get into later. I didn't really have too much information, yes I had Lung Cancer, but that was all.
My husband and I met with Oncologist at the Cancer Center of NC, what an awesome place to be treated. She confirmed that I had Non Small Cell Lung Cancer and immediately scheduled me for a biopsy and an appointment with a Thoracic Surgeon at Duke.
One of the hardest things was to tell my family and friends. CANCER IS NOT A DEATH SENTENCE. I can't tell you how many times I had to say this. I was so confident that I would be OK. Most cried and I had to be the strong one saying CANCER IS NOT A DEATH SENTENCE, I will be OK.
It was truly amazing to me how people responded to the news. During this journey I was surprised at those who stepped up and helped me and supported me, those who barely even knew me. My neighbors who banded together to supply pre-made meals from Dinner Savvy for months, yes months. And then those who could no longer speak to me because I found that everyone handles illness differently. My brother who no longer could call me, he was afraid I would die to my best friend in NY who could only cry every time I spoke to her. It's difficult for everyone who is involved, but throughout it all I knew l would be OK.
I had my biopsy which confirmed that I had Non Small Cell Lung Cancer in my left lung. I was stage 1B. The cancer was about 1 1/2 inches and had not spread. The Thoracic Surgeon and Oncologist told me that I was "lucky". The best cancer to get in the worst situation, OK.... I was immediately scheduled for a Lung Resection, which is they remove half your lung. Breathing Tests were conducted to see how this would affect my breathing and it was determined that there would be little affect and I would not need to be on oxygen after the surgery.
The morning of the surgery I had to leave at 4:30 in the morning, my husband and I were going alone, I was concerned because he doesn't handle these situations well. Boy were we surprised to find one of our neighbors sitting in her car waiting outside to bring us to the hospital, what great neighbors!!! What a god send.
I never asked "why me", I just continued on my journey to rid my body of the cancer. I relied on my faith to get me through and I knew I would be OK.
Did I mention I am stubborn? I was admitted into the hospital on October 30 and released November 2, 3 days. I was determined to be out of the hospital. My doctor told me that I could leave when I could walk the hallways, well I was up and about the day after the surgery walking the halls, I was going home and I would be OK. And I am. The power of prayer and positive thinking.
Overall Stage Grouping is also referred to as Roman Numeral Staging. This system uses numerals I, II, III, and IV (plus the 0) to describe the progression of cancer.
* Stage 0 carcinoma in situ.
* Stage I cancers are localized to one part of the body.
* Stage II cancers are locally advanced.
* Stage III cancers are also locally advanced. Whether a cancer is designated as Stage II or Stage III can depend on the specific type of cancer; for example, in Hodgkin's Disease, Stage II indicates affected lymph nodes on only one side of the diaphragm, whereas Stage III indicates affected lymph nodes above and below the diaphragm. The specific criteria for Stages II and III therefore differ according to diagnosis.
* Stage IV cancers have often metastasized, or spread to other organs or throughout the body.
Within the TNM system, a cancer may also be designated as recurrent, meaning that it has appeared again after being in remission or after all visible tumor has been eliminated. Recurrence can either be local, meaning that it appears in the same location as the original, or distant, meaning that it appears in a different part of the body.
Some doctors further diagnose using a letter system to further define cancer.
The CCNC became my second home for the next 9 months. They have seen me at my worst, which was pretty bad, the care and compassion was way above and beyond.
I had my port inserted the second week in November and started chem the week after. 2 weeks on 1 week off, which means I had chemo for 2 weeks and then had a week off. Really wasn't too too bad at the beginning. During the second month I had an adverse reaction to the drugs and had to start on a new drug and was now 3 weeks on 1 week off. I really had thought I was a strong women, these new drugs knocked me on my butt.
At one point my blood counts were so low that I had to have a transfusion and then weekly injections to keep my blood count within an acceptable range.
I had started chemo right before Thanksgiving, so Thanksgiving and Christmas were hard for us. We usually had a house full and I just couldn't do it and I didn't have the energy to go anywhere. I cried as I told me boys ages 20 and 18 how sorry I was. They were wonderful throughout my whole ordeal, helping me whenever they could.
Two of my neighbors accompanied me to my chemo sessions. 1 week was for 6 hours, 2 weeks were for 3 hours. It truly is amazing who stepped up and supported us. They stayed with me for over 8 hours during week one of each session, you truly learn who your friends are when you are sick and I will be eternally grateful to those who have helped us so much. We had lunch, we read, we laughed, we bonded with everyone who was going through the same thing, we all became friends and a support system for each other comparing notes, treatments and questions. The CCNC's treatment room is open, friendly and airy with a huge fish tank.
I knew that I would lose my hair. But know and then having it happen are two very, very different things. My neighbor and I went to the Lovely Lady. Darlene and her sister were great. They talked me through alot of my questions and were so knowledgeable. We tried on wigs and wraps and really made a great day of it. You learn to take things in stride or so I thought so....until my hair started to fall out and it happened so quickly.
It was about 2 weeks after my initial chemo, I was in the shower and I had a bunch of strands in my hand. I thought.. here we go. It was quite unnerving. So I went and had my shoulder length hair cut short but it still kept falling out but it was worse because it was short, go figure. I was in the shower and my hand was full of short hairs. I went back and had what I call a GI Jane, hey Demi, hair cut and the next day I went back and had it buzzed. It was better to cut it all off than have it fall out. That is just the way I felt, not everyone feels the same.
So I had a new style, no wigs, just lots of wraps, hats, scarves to match my clothes. I loved the scarf wraps so I could tie them tie and wrap the ends in.
I have medical coverage, but no prescription coverage. I was quite surprised to find out that my medical coverage did NOT, nope, cover all my medical expenses. My husband was out of work on unemployment, ouch.
The Financial Advisor was awesome!!! We were assured that I would still receive treatment and advised us to apply for grants. We applied for 3 grants and received financial aid that paid for some of the treatments. There are organizations that offer grants to pay for treatment. The prescription pills I took for nausea were $100 a pill, the CCNC forwarded my information and the drug company sent me my medication free of charge. Now don't get me wrong we are still trying to pay off 5 figures of medical bills but these organizations were a god send to us.
I also contacted the Financial Departments and asked for Financial Aid for my surgeries. I had been in 3 different hospitals. One hospital in particular allowed me $10,000 in medical care. Another a percentage off my bill according to our income. Each hospital is different but will try to assist you in paying your bill, at least mine did.
Research is the key. Ask questions about your payment options, what grants are available. Don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help. These are so important and definately lessens the stress, you certainly don't need anymore! I know I didn't.
A note about grants, there are different grants for different types of Cancer. Go online to cancer.gov. There is information on how to receive grants for treatment of cancer. There is link on the lower left side of the page. You will also be able to fill out the applications and send it in. Contact the National Cancer Institute, which offers grants for cancer treatment for patients across the country. The NCI is reachable by phone at (800) 422-6237, email at cancergovstaff@mail.nih.gov.
Contact institutions that treat specific types of cancers. For example, for breast cancer grants you can contact the Greenebaum Cancer Center by phone at (800) 888-8823 to apply for a grant. The Komen Foundation helps fund those who need assistance on cancer treatment through the cancer center.
I took weekly trips to the Cancer Center for over 8 months. My last chemo was May 27, 2009. It was the end of an era, almost the end of the journey. It was almost like a second family and I was almost sad to say good bye but it was a happy good bye. But then again, us survivors know that we will be back at least for me every 3 months for a PET Scan, which detects any cancer cells in your body and a Brain MRI.
It took almost 3 months for me to feel like my old self again, but then again it's a new me with a long journey behind me that has made me the new me. A better me for having finished this journey, meeting so many great, understanding people, having strangers help me for no other reason than because...For all those I Thank You from the bottom of my heart to the top of yours, you know who you are. You are the nurses, the doctors, the cancer centers across the world, the volunteers, the hospitals that called to see if I was OK, the drug companies and the grant institutions, the ladies at the Lovely Lady, my friends, my family, my neighbors, the strangers who didn't even know me......
I had my port removed December 28, 2009 and as I finish this am feeling great and looking forward to a new journey in life...being healthy...

I went back and had what I call a GI Jane, hey Demi, hair cut and the next day I went back and had it buzzed. It was better to cut it all off than have it fall out. That is just the way I felt, not everyone feels the same.
So I had a new style, no wigs, just lots of wraps, hats, scarves to match my clothes. I loved the scarf wraps so I could tie them tie and wrap the ends in.
I have medical coverage, but no prescription coverage. I was quite surprised to find out that my medical coverage did NOT, nope, cover all my medical expenses. My husband was out of work on unemployment, ouch.
The Financial Advisor was awesome!!! We were assured that I would still receive treatment and advised us to apply for grants. We applied for 3 grants and received financial aid that paid for some of the treatments. There are organizations that offer grants to pay for treatment. The prescription pills I took for nausea were $100 a pill, the CCNC forwarded my information and the drug company sent me my medication free of charge. Now don't get me wrong we are still trying to pay off 5 figures of medical bills but these organizations were a god send to us.
I also contacted the Financial Departments and asked for Financial Aid for my surgeries. I had been in 3 different hospitals. One hospital in particular allowed me $10,000 in medical care. Another a percentage off my bill according to our income. Each hospital is different but will try to assist you in paying your bill, at least mine did.
Research is the key. Ask questions about your payment options, what grants are available. Don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help. These are so important and definately lessens the stress, you certainly don't need anymore! I know I didn't.
A note about grants, there are different grants for different types of Cancer. Go online to cancer.gov. There is information on how to receive grants for treatment of cancer. There is link on the lower left side of the page. You will also be able to fill out the applications and send it in. Contact the National Cancer Institute, which offers grants for cancer treatment for patients across the country. The NCI is reachable by phone at (800) 422-6237, email at cancergovstaff@mail.nih.gov.
Contact institutions that treat specific types of cancers. For example, for breast cancer grants you can contact the Greenebaum Cancer Center by phone at (800) 888-8823 to apply for a grant. The Komen Foundation helps fund those who need assistance on cancer treatment through the cancer center.
I took weekly trips to the Cancer Center for over 8 months. My last chemo was May 27, 2009. It was the end of an era, almost the end of the journey. It was almost like a second family and I was almost sad to say good bye but it was a happy good bye. But then again, us survivors know that we will be back at least for me every 3 months for a PET Scan, which detects any cancer cells in your body and a Brain MRI.
It took almost 3 months for me to feel like my old self again, but then again it's a new me with a long journey behind me that has made me the new me. A better me for having finished this journey, meeting so many great, understanding people, having strangers help me for no other reason than because...For all those I Thank You from the bottom of my heart to the top of yours, you know who you are. You are the nurses, the doctors, the cancer centers across the world, the volunteers, the hospitals that called to see if I was OK, the drug companies and the grant institutions, the ladies at the Lovely Lady, my friends, my family, my neighbors, the strangers who didn't even know me......
I had my port removed December 28, 2009 and as I finish this am feeling great and looking forward to a new journey in life...being healthy...
